The Lehners Continued |
Dedicated to the sunshine of truth, the moonshine of meeting deadlines, and the starshine of Victoria. |
*** Alphonse Lehner and Louise Skudlarek survived the rivalry between Upsala and Holdingford, the building of the Berlin Wall, and three car accidents. And so they got married. Was there a formal proposal on bended knee? Replied Al, “We went to a movie or dinner and were sitting in front of her apartment. I had the ring in my pocket and I took it out and said, ‘I’d like you to be the mother of my children.’” “I cried,” said Louise. “For one thing, it was the biggest diamond I’d ever seen. On our 40th anniversary he gave me a ring with four beautiful diamonds, one for each of our four daughters.” They were married on October 10th, 1964, at St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church in Holidingford. Said Louise, “It’s tradition. My grandparents, Matt and Sophia, were married there and celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary there, and my parents, Frank and Adella, were married and celebrated their 50th there. Our daughter Kim and her husband Kevin were also married at St. Hedwig’s.” Father William Skudlarek performed the wedding ceremony for his sister Louise and her “cutie.” It’s noteworthy that as Al and Louise celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last month, Father William celebrated his 50th anniversary of ordination to the priesthood. “I think Father William has married all the kids and baptized all of our grandkids,” said Louise, who has an enormous soft spot in her heart for the priest brother. Where did the newlyweds go for their honeymoon? “To Brainerd, of course,” said Louise, “where everybody went. We sat on the bed and counted our money. We were thrilled. Then we found out it would take care of the booze bill.” The newlyweds lived in an apartment in New Hope and then bought a home in New Hope for $19,500. “I’m pregnant immediately,” said Louise, “and on our first anniversary, a florist delivered one long-stemmed red rose to our house. Every year on our wedding anniversary I got one more rose. This year I got 50 beautiful, long-stemmed red roses delivered to our house.” Said Al the Romantic, “I think I’ll start buying pansies now.” Louise’s first job as a hairdresser was at Willard Michael, “a wonderful beauty shop in St. Louis Park.” How did she get the job? “I walked in cold turkey and said I’d like to work for them. After two weeks I was on the floor. I had great customers there. They’d tip me $5 a head. That was a lot of money then. The customers were good to me.” Louise also recalled, “Wigs were big then, natural hair wigs, and I wanted one. Al said, ‘If you pay for it, you can have it.’ I did. The next weekend was a holiday ball at the Chalet and when Al dipped me on the dance floor, my wig fell off. I never wore it again.” Al worked as a Packaging Engineer for Liberty Carton Company in Golden Valley. “I moved from the factory to tool and dye maker,” he said. “I designed corrugated prototypes for salesmen.”
