To the Editor: I enjoy the Victoria Gazette when I find it at Mackenthun’s in Waconia. We like to clip the Island View coupon, of course, but I really enjoy the articles you have in the paper. I do have a question though. We attend the Excelsior Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, as do quite a few residents of Victoria. I have noticed that you have news from the various churches in Victoria itself. Would you print an occasional piece of news from Excelsior Congregational Church, or would it be considered an advertisement? If so, how much would it cost? I found the fishhook on page 39 around the lion’s head in Mike Wartman’s column. Anne Hawkins Waconia, Minnesota
To the Editor: After reading the delightful and informative Gazette, I like to look for the fishhook. Sometimes I find it and sometimes I do not. Well, I found this one on page 39 as part of the cartoon drawing on the lion’s head. Thanks for a great newspaper. Loyal Reader, Allen Oakes Victoria, Minnesota
To the Editor: A community blood drive was held in Victoria on July 21st. A total of 119 pints of blood was donated! We thank all of the volunteers and donors who made this drive successful. The bloodmobile is sponsored by the Victoria Lions. We appreciate all they do for the community. Kathy Sether and Wendy Amundsen Victoria, Minnesota
To the Editor: I have decided to seek re-election as the Mayor of Victoria. It has been a distinct privilege to serve as your mayor for the past year and a half. During this time and the prior four years serving on the City Council, Victoria has grown in population by almost 2,000 new residents. I have had the opportunity to meet many of you -- in person, via the internet, through phone calls, and at various Victoria festivals and meetings. In the months leading up to Election Tuesday, I hope to have many opportunities to share with you the accomplishments of your City Council and the plans to continue our progress. The position of mayor is one of leadership but, equally important, it is one of working closely with other members of the Council and the greater Victoria community to help position our city for a progressive dynamic future. In making my decision about whether or not I would seek re-election, I wanted to be sure that I would continue to have the time, resources, ingenuity, forward thinking ideas, and commitment to work hard for the Victoria Quality of Life. Victoria is blessed with relatively small active neighborhoods. Our neighborhoods foster communication and opportunities to come together to create an inclusive, active, and vibrant community. This is a strength I value. I also believe that Victoria’s future lies in actively seeking partnerships, new services, and new businesses. We need to move into our future with a pledge of strong financial stewardship. This means carefully allocating resources at appropriate times, investing limited city dollars where residents will receive the best return. I have been privileged to serve with a City Council that has been working very hard on your behalf. I am asking for your support to continue my involvement as Mayor of Victoria. I remain committed to listening to your ideas and concerns and working closely with councilmembers, the city staff, and our community partners on topics that focus on the future. Thank you for the opportunities you have afforded me. Mary Hershberger Thun, Mayor City of Victoria
To the Editor: September already! School’s back in session and kids are out of their parents’ hair for a few hours every day. I can still remember Ma on school days. She would start laundry at 5 a.m. and flip on my bedroom light and in her exact words: “Get your butt out of bed, Lady Jane! Get your clothes in the wash!” Ma’s got a ringer washer going as she bellers up the basement steps or laundry chute like a lion. Throw down the dish towels, pot holders, bathroom towels. Dad’s still asleep and never hears this? My little brother she never bothered. Always me, the “Lady Jane.” I don’t know anyone who’s ever been called Lady Jane by their ma or who got told to hustle your bustle. Do you think lions catch fish? Your fishhook is around the lion’s head on page 39. Only house cats catch fish. Bribe them into a game of Sheephead with Father Conran and go fish. Kay Meuwissen Chaska, Minnesota
