To the Editor:

During this political season, let’s be reminded of these wise words ...

You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.  You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.  You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging the thrift.  You cannot lift the wage earner by pulling other wage earners down.  You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.  You cannot build character and courage by taking away men’s initiative and independence.  You cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they could, and should, do for them themselves. ~Abraham Lincoln.

To the Editor:

We are very excited to announce that the first annual Victoria Bayfront Art Fair will be held Saturday, October 4th,  from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  People are invited to come out and enjoy a beautiful autumn day and get a preview of the proposed Lakeside Waterfront Development in Victoria.

Over 20 talented local artists will be exhibiting their work.  Some of the work is expected to be in the new Expressive Arts Gallery and School which is proposed to be adjacent to the Waterfront Plaza.

Come October 4th and enjoy food, music, and artisans including painters, woodworkers, jewelers, and more.  This event is being sponsored in part by area businesses to bring exposure to the area around the LRT Trail and Carver Park Reserve where plans have been started that include extensive improvements of that open space area.

Officials hope to include a Waterfront Public Plaza with views of Stieger Lake, trailhead bike racks, and an expanded natural amphitheater.  The buildings being proposed by Hartman Communities will have an area for outdoor dining, storefront shops, office lofts, and lower level studio spaces.

Groundbreaking is hoped for the spring of 2009.  The lakeview property will be available for lease or purchase and feature a shingle-cottage architectural theme.  For information on the building project, people are invited to contact Terry Hartman at 952-368-4547 or email terry@hartmancommunities.com.

To the Editor:

This morning (August 27th) I filed for re-election to the Victoria City Council.  I made the decision over this past weekend after careful consideration and thoughtful review.  In the last four years, we have made much progress in a number of areas as a city.

         1) We have continued a successful re-development of our downtown central business district and recently closed on the 13.5 acres that we received in a land swap with the Three Rivers Park District.  This will allow us to further expand our commercial activities.

         2) We have hired and retained competent staff and worked toward becoming a more professionally managed city.

         3) We have worked to address financial and other issues with the Victoria Field House by embarking on an exciting new partnership with School District 112 which will enlarge the facility and benefit our community.

         4) We have completed and opened the new Water Treatment facility and Fire Station, paving the way for future needs and growth.

         5) We have a new elementary school in Victoria after hard work by many and support of the voters.

         6) We are closer than we have ever been before to having a full service grocer and drug store in Victoria.

These are just a few of the many accomplishments of the City Council, the staff, our citizen commissions and our residents.  We will have a lot more work to do, however, and I would like to be part of that effort.

I look forward to hearing from all of you with your ideas and suggestions for new initiatives and improvements.  I would also like to thank those of you that contacted me in the last month, encouraging me to run again.  That kind of encouragement and thanks is why it is such an honor and privilege to serve you, the citizens of Victoria.

         Very truly yours.
