Letters to the Editor

To the Editor:
You do great work.  You and the Gazette are the voice of the Victoria soul.  As long as the Gazette lives, Victoria will always have that small town feel.  I like your web site.

To the Editor:
Last year a total of 4,923 individuals from 1,451 households in Carver and Scott counties received food at least once from the CAP Agency Food Shelf.  Forty-nine percent of the individuals were under 16 years of age.  Sixty-five percent of the households had at least one working adult.
We want to stress that the majority of people coming to the food shelf are still unable to make ends meet.  This is especially true this winter.  As heating costs rise, many working families who were tightly budgeted before are now exceeding their financial means.
March is Minnesota FoodShare Month.  Minnesota FoodShare is an annual statewide campaign with the purpose of meeting the unmet needs of hungry people by promoting food and monetary donations to benefit food shelves throughout the state.
Each year the CAP Agency partici-pates in Minnesota FoodShare to support its food shelf in Shakopee.  The CAP Agency Food Shelf serves residents of Carver and Scott counties who are unable to provide an adequate amount of food to feed their household.
On the average, the CAP Agency Food Shelf serves 20 to 25 households each day and annually distributes approximately 400,000 pounds of food.  There are specific preferred items that best meet the needs of Food Shelf clients.  These items include canned fruit, canned vegetables, canned soup, baked beans, canned tuna, pasta, rice, cereal, peanut butter, macaroni and cheese, instant mashed potatoes, and baby food.
For more information, please contact the CAP Agency at 952-496-2125 and ask for Joan Lynch, the CAP Food and Nutrition Services Director.

To the Editor:
Can you let my sister Germaine see this "Memo from God"?  I don't know how it will print out for you.  If not, maybe she can see it on your computer system.  I promised it to her.  By the way, she said I should tell you, "No More Quotes!"  I gather she is not fond of them, especially those she says you make up.

To the Editor:
A little bit of Africa will soon be coming to the Minnesota Zoo.  In June, 2001, "Meerkrats of the Kalahari" will make its public debut at the Zoo.  Made famous by "Timone" in "The Lion King," meerkrats are very social, curious creatures who depend upon one another for survival.
Actually a type of mongoose, meerkrats live in "mobs" or "gangs" of up to 40, an spend much of their day foraging for food (snakes, insects, rodents, insects) and looking out for predators.  Native to the Kalahari Desert, they dwell in complex tunnel systems, consisting of mounds and tunnels.
Children and families alike are sure to love this exhibit.
Please let me know if you would consider a story on these adorable creatures and their new home at the Minnesota Zoo, possibly as a preview in May.  I look forward to hearing from you.  Thanks much.

To the Editor:
When it's springtime in Minnesota
And the gentle breezes blow
About seventy miles an hour
And it's fifty-two below,
You can tell you're in Minnesota
'Cause the snow's up to your butt,
And you take a breath of springtime air
And your nose holes both freeze shut.
The weather around here is wonderful,
So I guess I'll hang around.
I could never leave Minnesota -
My feet are frozen to the ground.
