Letters Continued

To the Editor:

This is a letter to the good citizens of Victoria.  On the early morning of Thursday, March 11th, I was awakened from a deep sleep by a call from the Carver County Sheriff’s Office.  In the middle of the night, the church bells at St. Victoria were ringing loudly and continuously.

Let me back up for a bit.  They’d been ringing loudly and continuously since 10 p.m. that evening.  I was aware of it.  I put in a call to inquire of our church bell maintenance person, but apparently they had already gone to bed.

Being at a loss about what to do, because I’m not very mechanically inclined, I naively and perhaps quite presumptuously, assumed that the problem would magically take care of itself at some point during the night and all would be well in Victoria.

Within minutes I was sound asleep, lulled into an unconscious state by the rhythmic clang of the church bells.  The next thing I remember, the phone was ringing.

Yes, as I suspected and somehow knew, the clanging bells of St. Victoria had not stopped.  Only now it had woken half of the neighborhood, probably more than several of whom were peppering the Sheriff’s Office with calls of complaint.

Now, in my business, when you’re to blame, you stand up and take it like a man.  So that’s what I’m doing.  My apologies to the folks of Victoria city proper.  If on the morning of March 11th, clanging bells kept you awake, that was due to a sleeping pastor who thought they would cease on their own.

Be assured those bells are fixed now, thanks to the help of Carver County Officer Ben.  With me and my dog Betsy looking on, Officer Ben alertly pushed a button that said, “off.”  And so they were.

When you hear the bells now, it will be to sound the beginning of a church service, the Angelus, or to let you know it’s dinner time.  In any cases, those church doors are open to all of you.  Drive buy any Sunday morning, we’re open for business.

To the Editor:

Hi, Sue.  I would like to express my sincere thanks to those establishments in Victoria that have so generously supported the Friends of Ninos Adelante.  This organization is a Minnesota nonprofit that educates kids in Zihuatanejo, Mexico.

Salon Spatoria, Fresh Seasons Market, Cuzzy’s Victoria House, and Floyd’s have all been supporters for the last several years.  Their generous donations have helped us raise funds to support 219 high school and college kids in the Zihuatanejo area.

We are changing our fundraising activities this year and will not be asking these businesses for their support as in the past.  I just wanted everyone in this area to know that these Victoria businesses are very generous with the support of nonprofit organizations and deserve our full support in return.  Thank you.
