It's never been a sacrifice for me to avoid meat on Fridays during Lent. There are countless meals and menus that easily come in handy on meatless Fridays, especially grilled salmon filets or boiled cod or shrimp kabobs. My old friend Germaine used to say, "I don't know what's the big deal about giving up meat on Fridays. I love lobster." And so every year at this time I would explain to the dear lady that the message was not just in the giving up of things, but in the memory of why we pass up red meat and the iron and protein that it provides a body, or why we might give up comfort candy or favorite foods. Every year Germaine would initiate this same conversation by talking about lobster during Lent. I wonder how many times my friend ate lobster during Lent! And I wonder if she was just being her funny self asking the rhetorical question.

In any case, this column remains in the arena of fish all year round, or should I say in the bucket of minnows? And when I dipped into that bucket a couple days ago, I pulled Donald Happ of Waconia up for fresh air and a $10 check from the Victoria Gazette. He found the fishhook in the March issue of the Gazette, wrapped inside the handle of the Easter Basket in the Victoria Lions Easter Egg Hunt ad. Of course, he sent in his entry to be part of this monthly drawing. Congratulations, Mr. Happ. Does anybody call you The Donald?
