When we travel the roads to southwestern Minnesota to my growing-up home, we don’t see many lakes along the way. There’s School Grove Lake along Hwy 19 in Lyon County but mainly the windshield view is of flat farmland and a few sloughs and swamps, especially toward the end of that 135-mile stretch.

Recall that on the short 7-mile stretch between Victoria and Chanhassen we’re aware of Lake Ann, Lake Minnewashta, Lake Tamarack, Schutz Lake, and Stieger Lake. In a 15-mile radius of Victoria our screen can easily pick up another couple dozen lakes, many that lie within the city limits of Victoria. Hence, Victoria is the City of Lakes by nature and the City of Lakes and Parks by design.

Back to the beginning, I didn’t acquire an aquatic mentality in my growing-up land. ‘Twas an agrarian mentality that grounded me with my nose most often hooked to the grindstone rather than the fishing pole.

Yet I’ve got my very own virtual tackle box today and it’s filled with virtual fishhooks. Where do you think I’m getting all those fishhooks that I hide in each issue of the Gazette these past many years!! Last month I wrapped a fishhook around the back of an Adirondack chair in the Timberwall ad. When I went to the minnow bucket, I pulled out Jon Hokanson of Chanhassen so he wins the ten-dollar drawing. Congratulations, Jon.
