SHORTER VICTORIA SCOOP FROM JULY

RELOCATING AUGUST 9TH CITY COUNCIL MEETING

*This year’s Primary Election is scheduled for Tuesday, August 10th, and city staff needs Monday, August 9th, to set up the Council Chamber room for voters and election judges.  Therefore the normally scheduled Monday, August 9th, city council meeting will be relocated that evening to the Community Room at the Victoria Fire Station.

*Speaking to Victoria city councilmembers on July 12th, Paula Borer of Ridgeview and the Marie Steiner Kelting Hospice Home stated, “The address is technically Chaska, but I feel like our new hospice home is in Victoria.  It’s just past the Deer Run Golf Course on Lake Bavaria.”

*Council authorized application by the Victoria Fire Department for a Minnesota Board of Firefighter Training and Education Grant in the amount of $6,000.  The non-matching grant would be used to reimburse the department for training and education costs.

*Council accepted a donation of $200 from Kennedy & Graven, the city attorney’s firm, designated for a Volksfest adirondack chair and employee picnic.

*Administrator Don Uram reported that the City of Victoria received 70 applications for the initial entry Public Works employee position.  Final interviews were July 30th.

*“For some reason they picked me,” said City Administrator Don Uram about being chosen by the International City Managers Association to be a National Committee Member.  “I will respectfully decline that position,” said Don, since one of its twice-yearly meetings is held abroad.  Said Mayor Thun, “Let’s not decline so fast.  I can’t believe there are cities that want to send their people overseas.”  She suggested checking things out first.

*Reported Mayor Thun, “Eden Prairie has been chosen as the best place to live in the United States.  Our city administrator is a resident of Eden Prairie.  He worked for Eden Prairie for 18 years and brought about many of their developments.  We hire good staff here.  Don and Eden Prairie have our congratulations.”

*Council approved the 2010-2011 Fire Aid Agreement with Laketown Township.  The City of Victoria annually provides fire protection to the township at their request.  The fee will be $19,120 for the contract period.

*Council approved an application for a $10,000 matching grant from the Minnesota Twins Fields for Kids to relocate Lions Park Field #5 to create a “true” fastpitch softball field.  If the grant is awarded, the remaining funding will be the responsibility of a parent group from Holy Family Catholic High School and perhaps others.  Total cost is estimated at $90,000.

*Council accepted an amount of $100 from an anonymous donor for the city employee picnic.

*Council cancelled the scheduled December 27th council meeting since it falls at Christmas time.
