The Victoria GAZETTE |
August 2010 |
To the Editor: Is there a better online archive of your August 2003 issue of the Gazette? I think there are more pictures in there but only one displays at the top. Steve Kish Chanhassen, Minnesota
To the Editor: We recently returned from a trip to Hilton Head Island, SC; Lebanon, PA; Toronto, Canada; and Chicago. Delightful things we learned about our youngest granddaughter Jamie Thierolf. Jamie received two awards from Omicron Delta Kappa, the national leadership honor society. She received the Outstanding Sophomore of the Year award at Moravian College in Bethlehem, PA, as well as the Unsung Hero award for her work with different volunteer organizations on campus such as Colleges Against Cancer (sponsors the Relay for Life on campus) and The Learning Connection, which includes Big Brother/Big Sister, Habitat for Humanity, C3 (a community organization), an after-school Salvation Army homework group, as well as many other groups. It is very rare that a sophomore would receive both of these awards. Jamie also headed up a trip of students from Moravian College and some adults from Lebanon Moravian Church to Jamaica where almost 200 students attended a Bible Study class they taught. The group also did some repair work on damaged homes. She received a scholarship to study Spanish for the ensuing semester and is now in Valparaiso, Chile, staying with a family for the next five months. Jamie is majoring in Spanish and Elementary Education. Her parents are Pam Holtmeier Thierolf and The Rev. Richard Thierolf. Ron Holtmeier Victoria, Minnesota
To the Editor: Sorry I’m late with my $20 for the Victoria Gazette. I was back in Minnesota from July 9th to July 18th for two family reunions. The Meuwissen’s (my mother’s side) reunion was held in Cologne, and the Schwalbe’s reunion was in Waconia. I also got to see the “new” Victoria as I stopped at Fresh Seasons Market (Wow!) and went to the Lake Auburn Moravian Church and met the Rev. Brian Dixon, sat with John Kroening and Wilfred Plocher. Rev. Dixon is very good! Also saw the great crops in Carver County, the Twins win, and even some Minnesota hail and good old fashioned storms. I had not been back for a couple of years and relied on the Victoria Gazette to keep me up on how great you all have it in Victoria area. Thank you, Sue. Daniel Schwalbe High Point, North Carolina
To the Editor: I am saddened to report Butch Hedtke’s death on July 25th. Memorial services were held at the Waconia Moravian Church on July 30th. A visitation was held at the Glende-Nilson Funeral Home in Fergus Falls. Interment was at the Zoar Moravian Cemetery. Butch had been a member of the Moravian Church of Lake Auburn in Victoria and grew up on a farm that was near the historic Grimm Home in Three Rivers Park District here in Victoria. While his obit did not mention it, he has a brother Everal. Ron Holtmeier Victoria, Minnesota
To the Editor: I would like to thank Congressman John Kline for his endorsement of needed highway improvements in Carver County. As the Metropolitan Council and MnDOT work to revise the long range vision for our highway system, Congressman Kline has urged them to include the expansion of Hwy 212 from Chaska to NYA and Hwy 5 from Chanhassen to NYA. Our roadways and transit systems are clearly inadequate to meet today’s needs, let alone future needs. The opening of the new Hwy 212 improved our transportation greatly, but this critical facility needs to be a continuous four-lanes from I494 to NYA and beyond. The crash rate on Hwy 5 is more than 20 percentage points higher than the statewide average; the fatality rate is more than 70 percentage points higher than the statewide average. Improvements are needed. Bob Lindall, President SW Corridor Transp. Coalition Chaska, Minnesota
