[County Attorney Mark Metz continued:] "My wife and I have two dogs and we've lived in Victoria six years. For eight months I officed in the Hartman Building. We love it here. We love all of Carver County." "How hard is it to train a Portuguese Waterdog?" asked Councilmember Kim Roden, referring to a feature story in the Gazette about the new Dog Park in Victoria. Mr. Metz said the dogs basically are under the care of his wife. "Have you been able to fulfill your vision? Are there any surprises?" asked Coucilmember Roden. "It's been surprising getting used to the administration role," he replied. "I love to be in the court room -- I'm prosecuting two murder cases -- but there are other needs as well. We've had savings by not replacing people right away." "We are just beginning to prepare a budget for 2012," said Mayor Mary Thun. "We're pretty aggressive in our schedule. Have you met yet with our Finance Director?" "Not yet," replied Attorney Metz. "We'll be talking with you." "Thank you for being a resident of Victoria," said Mayor Thun. "We're pretty proud of that."
BOARD CHAIRMAN RANDY MALUCHNIK “I’m encourage by the good job you folks have done” Carver County Commissioner Randy Maluchnik, recently appointed Chairman of the Board, attended the July 11th city council meeting. "I just spent a half day in the dead zone -- at a meeting in St. Paul with the League of Cities folks," said the Commissioner. "I've seen charts that show how wonderful local cities have done since 2002 in lowering the cost of government, as compared to our good friends who are elected to serve us in St. Paul, so I was encouraged by that, and I plan to help educate people about how good of a job you folks have done." Randy said that on his recent travels he noticed a warning light system in Nebraska that worked rather well for controlling speed. "That might be a good compromise for us with MnDOT," he said, regarding speed on County Road 11 thru Victoria. Councilmember Tom O'Connor asked for an update on County Road 18. "The county can't afford to do 18 right now," said the Commissioner. "That's the plain and simple fact. Maybe in five years. In my position, it's wonderful if you can get something done in five years. I imagine if you move over to St. Paul, it's wonderful to get something done in ten years ... It's always hard to get people to think long term vision. We've been failing in this county for probably 30 years with transportation infrastructure ... The goal with #18 is to finish up the east and work to the west. The Board has agreed to that. I don't think there's a political will for 18." About Hwy 5, he reported the State "thinks a county should subsidize a state highway -- with $5 million for Hwy 5 -- but that makes our county roads less safe." Asked Councilmember Kim Roden, "Has the county done anything to encourage legislators to get their business done?" "We passed a resolution last week," replied Randy. "Today we completed an op editorial. Today the Governor said the income tax increase is off the table and he's moving toward a sales tax increase of some sort. It [the gov't shutdown] is harming our whole free market system and it's going to have ramifications for quite some time. It makes our job as locally elected officials very difficult." "Thank you for coming," said Mayor Thun. "It's always a privilege and a pleasure to have you in Victoria."
