by Sue Orsen The Victoria Gazette Each year at the Victoria Lions Tournament Weekend, a theme seems to arise among the people who come to watch ballgames, work the concessions, eat delicious burgers, brats, and hotdogs, and enjoy sweet summertime at Lions Park. This year that third weekend in July was in many ways a coupling theme, a coupling event, as the Lions coupled with the community. In some years, large families were prominent at the picnic tables or in the shade of the old oak trees. In other years, dozens of young parents were pushing babies in strollers from one shelter to the next. In earlier years of the tournament, old-timers congregated and cracked a few beers and a few jokes as they enjoyed the familiarity of each other and the ballpark. This year, which marked the 48th annual Victoria Lions Tournament (the first was in the summer of 1969, two and a half years after the club was chartered in the fall of 1966), it seemed to be a coupling event. A couple here, a couple there, all adding up to more than a thousand in number. It's the biggest Lions event and fundraiser of the year. Forty ball teams were on the 2017 roster over the three days, which alone accounts for some thousand people since the ballplayers bring families and friends. The Gazette was drawn to capture some of the people in pairs at this wonderful Victoria weekend, many of them Victoria Lions. Chair of this year's Lions Tournament Weekend was Lion Laura O'Neill, who served as President of the Lions Club through July 1st, 2017. Laura has had an outstanding year that included celebrating the Victoria Lions 50th anniversary this past fall. The "immediate past president" is always in charge of this huge tournament weekend. Several other Victoria Lions are in charge of the various job details and responsibilities at hand including Lion Dan Notermann and Lion Doug Gibson (Beer and Ale); Lion Tim Sebenaler and Lion Kurt Zuppke (Pop and Candy); Lion Mark Hines, Lion Jack Hines, Lion Geno Mucciacciaro, and Lion Stephanie Meuwissen (Food and Condiments); Lion Wayne Neubarth (Moneyhandler); and Chip Peglow (Grounds Crew). The Club has over 100 members today, and nearly all of them and their spouses worked four-hour shifts over the three-day Tournament Weekend -- frying the burgers, slicing the tomatoes, keeping fresh condiments in good supply, serving ice cold beer and pop, selling food tickets, and tending in general to visitors and ballplayers all across Lions Park. Some of the winning ball teams and the prize money awarded included Midwest Chiropractic (1st Place, $300), Da Boars (2nd Place, $250), TLC Management (3rd Place, $150), Lodin Trucking (4th Place, $100), and Vic's Monkeys (5th Place, $75). Thank you, Victoria Lions, for putting together another wonderful weekend.
