FRIENDS WITH 1000 FRIENDS OF MINNESOTA VICTORIA PARTICIPATES IN SMART GROWTH “We value the relationship with Victoria immensely,” said Dan Marckel, the Community Outreach and Education Coordinator through the Community Growth Options (CGO) program with 1000 Friends. “We’ve been working with the administrator in Victoria for about a year now, doing an evaluation as to what kind of an effect we’ve had in the community. A survey will be available for any citizen of Victoria. It measures beliefs and attitudes about issues we’re working on, to see what direction attitudes are going, how things are changing.” Stated Mayor Mary Thun on November 9th, “This 1000 Friends grant is very important to Victoria. Thank you and the McKnight Foundation.” Holly Kreft, City Planner and Community Development Director, has been responsible for several grants coming to the City of Victoria. In response to questions, Holly submitted the following background information. “In April of 2008, the City Council authorized staff to apply for the Community Growth Options grant through 1000 Friends of Minnesota. We were one of ten communities in Minnesota selected in June of 2008. “1000 Friends of Minnesota is a nonprofit organization that promotes smart growth principles. They received funding from the McKnight Foundation to start the CGO program. The City receives funding from 1000 Friends. “Each of ten communities will be awarded a grant in Year One of up to $40,000 and up to $24,000 in Year Two for the purpose of establishing a long-term framework for community planning, zoning, and implementation. Communities that are working toward desired project outcomes are eligible for financial support over the six years of the project, totaling up to $100,000. “The grant money is used to offset costs for hiring a planning consultant firm. 1000 Friends selected three firms from which the City could choose. We interviewed all three firms and chose Bonestroo. There are three projects that we are doing, or will be doing, with the grant money: 1) zoning and subdivision ordinance updates, 2) master planning of the Marsh Lake area, 3) master planning the future business park area. “1000 Friends has also sent a newsletter to households as an insert in the city newsletter, invited staff and Planning Commissioners and Councilmembers to a kickoff event and training in June, and invited them also on a tour of conservation subdivisions in the metro area in October.”

Merry Christmas, Victoria Senior Commission. Members of the Victoria Senior Commission were recognized at the November 9th city council meeting for their work to identify and meet the needs of the older members of the community. Katy Boone from the Carver County Office of Aging stated, “This group is always one of my pleasures of the month. They’ve invited churches and talked about unmet needs and looked at options for housing.” She said there are 7,000 county residents over age 65 today and there will be more than 30,000 citizens in Carver County over age 65 by the year 2030.” Stated City Councilmember Jim Paulsen, “That’s a big number!” Carver County Commissioner Randy Maluchnik, who presented the placque, said he was pleased with the fact that this group is an example of good ideas and work coming from the people.
