The Victoria GAZETTE |
by Sue Orsen At Christmas time our eyes come to focus even more on the children among us, partly because of the Infant Christ Child born on Christmas Day over 2,000 years ago and the sentiment that event elicits. “Oh come, little children; oh come, one and all. Draw near to the crib here in Bethlehem’s stall.” At no other time of the year do our thoughts turn to the past as they do at Christmas time, as we listen to Silent Night, turn on the tree lights, serve our family dinner, attend church services, sing the carols, sit by the fire, open the gifts. We read letters and cards from old friends and family and catch up on days gone by. It’s tradition! And so here we are once again getting ready for another Christmas. Where have the days gone? Where have the years gone? They’re almost palpable and yet so out of reach. I suppose that’s why photograph albums and scrapbooking remain popular. It’s a way to snatch some of our favorite moments and keep them closer to us. It’s a way to tell a story that’s already been told, not unlike those that begin with “Once upon a time ...” or, even, “In the beginning ...” Of all living things, only humanity has the capacity, and the desire, to tell its own story. I’m using this Christmas issue of the Victoria Gazette to put some scrapbooking pages together for our children, Jenny and Nick, who are grown and married with children of their own. The story of Jenny and Nick’s past Christmases here at their childhood home in Victoria is also my story since I’m almost always the one taking the pictures. Only a tiny portion of life is recorded, of course, but that tiny portion is what helps us recall and retell the story of our lives together. Blest be the ties that bind. Merry Christmas to all and may your albums and scrapbooks be filled with wonderful stories, replete with love and delight.
