NEARLY 100 DELINQUENT WATER BILLS VICTORIA CHARGES A FEE, DOESN’T DISCONNECT Council adopted a resolution on November 22nd certifying delinquent utility bills to the county for collection with 2011 property taxes. This year there were 91 delinquent accounts compared to 62 last year, 36 of them repeat offenders. Average amount to be certified is $415 per owner, for a total of $37,630. The city charges a $45 certification fee per delinquent account, totalling $4,095. Total amount to be certified is therefore $41,725. Stated Councilmember Kim Roden, “Are people not understanding this? People should not be itemizing their water fees along with their property taxes. I think people should pay their water bills on time.” “Yes, the delinquencies have gone up,” said Administrator Don Uram. “We count on cooperation of the homeowner. It’s certainly appreciated and helpful to us.”
A TWO-WAY STREET WITH THE LMCC VICTORIA WANTS BETTER MEDIACOM SERVICE Council approved the 2011 budget of the Lake Minnetonka Communication Commission, of which Victoria is one of 17 member cities. Projected expenditures of the LMCC total $675,000. As Sally Koenecke, Executive Director of the LMCC informs, this budget is not funded with tax dollars, but rather a cable company franchise fee paid annually to the LMCC, plus access fees for community use of the production studio. Stated Councilmember Jim Paulsen on November 8th, “I hope the message is going out that people are not satisfied with Mediacom.” Replied Councilmember Tom O’Connor, the city’s representative on the Commission, “The LMCC is not at all satisfied with the performance of Mediacom. Our citizens are paying roughly $77,000 per year to them.” Added Councilmember Kim Roden, “I’d be interested in knowing if we’re getting our money’s worth as citizens and as a city. There are sanctions and remedies to allow local bodies to take our concerns and act on them. We should work to get service requirements met. It is a two-way street.” Stated City Administrator Don Uram, “They have always been willing to work with us but we need to ask.” He mentioned, in particular, their recording of the bike race in Victoria as well as the Victoria Volksfest.
