REFURBISHING AN OLD FIRE TRUCK

TO BECOME VICTORIA’S BACKUP ENGINE

Four members of the Victoria Fire Department were on hand at the November 13th city council meeting as Fire Chief Andrew Heger presented information regarding the proposed refurbishment of their 1992 fire engine.  "We're here to get your permission to start that project," he said.

"It was basically our first-out engine for the past 20 years," said Chief Heger.  "It's basically being relegated to a backup role.  We want to make it into 30-year truck.  We need to repair corrosion because of oxidation.  There are mechanical issues.  We need to replace the seats which are well worn and held together by duct tape and have no shoulder belts.  The pump transmission is broke.  Right now it's a storage cabinet on wheels.  We need to replace the generator that was built in 1992.  The next time it crashes, no parts are available.  The air conditioner throws very little cold air.  There are a couple of other minor things."

He said that vendors are estimating 60 to 90 days to do the work that will make it a backup engine for at least  another ten years.  "The early numbers are that it will cost $80,000 to $100,000," he said.  "We'd like your approval to solicit numbers from vendors.  We've looked at five vendors and we try to keep it local, Minnesota based.  Our last engine was built in Wyoming, Minnesota, which makes it a lot easier on us for traveling to see it."

Andrew said that the refurbishment is in the 2012 capital improvement plan and listed as a cost of $150,000.  The work will be paid from the Fire Truck Equipment Fund.

Advised Council, "Go get your quotes."
