NEW VICTORIA CITY COUNCIL TOGETHER IN THE NEW YEAR At the first Victoria City Council meeting of the new year, one newly elected and two re-elected councilmembers were officially sworn into office by City Administrator Don Uram. They included first-time officeholder Tom O’Connor and incumbents Mayor Mary Thun and Kim Roden. The mayor ran unopposed this past fall; there were six candidates for the two council seats. Mayor Thun said that her resolution for the new year -- her goal -- is to keep city council meetings under two hours. “I’m serious about that,” she stated. On January 9th, 2009, the Victoria City Council meeting last one hour and 59 minutes. The second council meeting of 2009, which had a very short agenda, was held on Thursday, January 22nd, in the Community Room of the Victoria Water Treatment Plant because current City Offices were undergoing cleanup construction due to a mold and mildew problem. Beginning in February, all Victoria City Council meetings will be held on the second and fourth Mondays of each month rather than the second and fourth Thursdays of each month, in order to accommodate the work of the Victoria Planning Commission.
MAKING VICTORIA’S APPOINTMENTS TO SEVERAL COMMITTEES AND COMMISSIONS At the first meeting of 2009, Victoria City Councilmembers volunteered for and accepted assignments as liaisons or members on various commissions and committees in the City of Victoria. In the past it has been called the annual Organizational Meeting. Some of the appointments are required by state statute or city ordinances. Others are optional appointments. They are made to help the city conduct its business. Said City Administrator Don Uram, “We have far more appointments than other communities.” He said that liaison councilmembers can be voting or nonvoting members of the committees/commissions. Council followed Kim Roden’s recommendation that liaison members be non-voting. He also said liaison councilmembers can be participating or non-participating members of the committees/commissions. Said Tim Amundsen, “Without some active participation, we might as well put up cutouts of ourselves on the wall.” As for official meetings in 2008, Administrator Uram reported there were 129 whereas in 2007 there were only 96. Appointments were as follows: Acting Mayor: Kim Roden EDA: City Adm. & Council Fire Relief: Mayor, Adm., Fire Chief Cable Commission: Tom O’Connor Park & Rec Committee: Jim Paulsen Planning: Tom O’Connor, Mayor Thun Business Development: Kim Roden Finance: Tom O’Connor, Jim Paulsen Personnel Committee: Tim Amundsen Senior Commission: Mayor Mary thun City Attorney: Michael Norton/K&G City Engineer: Cara Geheren/TKDA Fire Chief: Tim Walsh Asst Chief: Andrew Heger, Gary Sohns Fire Marshall: Troy Walsh
