TOWN COP ERICK BODER MOVES ON VICTORIA SAYS HELLO TO DEPUTY JOSH BAKER “I’ve enjoyed working with everyone,” said Deputy Erick Boder, who has served as the Victoria Town Cop for the last four years in the Carver County Sheriff’s Department. “I’ve made a lot of great friends. It’s going to be weird not being here.” Erick reported he is now going to be a Corporal in Support Services, running water patrol and snowmobile patrol. In a letter to the editor of the Victoria Gazette last month, announcing his move to a new position, Deputy Boder wrote, “One of the things I value most was the opportunity to work with a community that is active with their government and takes pride in their city.” He introduced Deputy Josh Baker as his replacement as Victoria Town Cop. Said Deputy Baker, “I look forward to taking over for Erick. He’s got some big shoes to fill.” Stated Mayor Mary Thun, “Erick, you’ve been so helpful to us, especially with events like the Volksfest. Thank you for everything you’ve done for the community.”
LOOKING AT THE ECONOMY A SLOW YEAR FOR BUILDING INSPECTORS “It’s been a difficult year for a lot of people in the economy,” said Administrator Don Uram on January 8th. “I’ve come to the conclusion to temporarily lay off our building inspector based on the workload.” He said the city’s number of building permits is down to 43 from 106. The building inspector is Bill Schwanke, and he works under the department head of Building Official Tom Gray. “This layoff is with the intent to try to call him back by April 15th. I would like to reduce some of our engineering expense and maybe our building inspector could learn to do some of those things.” On a note related to building inspection, Councilmember Kim Roden said, “I don’t think we have unsafe rental units now, but with the Burnsville fire I have to say I’ve rethought that. Vacant homes, also. We might want to take another look at these things. What should be our policy? What is our number of rental units? What is the number of our vacant homes?” Stated Councilmember Tim Amundsen, “I am vehemently opposed to government knocking on doors and to government intrusion. There are already a certain amount of things of concern that can trigger activity. I don’t want the city to be Big Brother. I don’t want to spend money on that.” Said Councilmember Jim Paulsen, “I think this is a neighborhood issue. There’s a vacant home in Deer Run. Neighborhoods have reduced vandalism because they want to protect their own values.”
