TOM WALSH RETIRES AFTER SERVING 38 YEARS IN THE VICTORIA FIRE DEPARTMENT Victoria Fire Chief Andrew Heger, other members of the Victoria Fire Department, the Victoria City Council and Staff, and his own family recognized and honored retired Victoria Firefighter Tom Walsh on December 10th for 38 years and 4 months of service on the Victoria Fire Department. Said Chief Heger, "We are gathered here tonight to honor a very special firefighter. Tom's impact in the fire service community is based on the large amount of active Victoria firefighters who are here tonight. Some of those in the audience have been retired for 20-plus years, and are here to recognize Tom. "Tom has been an active member of the community since moving here in the late 1960's, by serving on the City Council and with the Victoria Lions. Tom joined the Victoria Fire Department in 1974, and that is seven years before I was even born, and he served until June of 2012. "Tom has served many positions within the Department, including Captain for 20 years and as Department Secretary for 20-plus years. Tom responded to thousands of emergency calls during his career, touching many peoples' lives whom he has never even met. "During his service to the community, Tom also had to face and overcome his own challenges, beating cancer three separate times as well as several heart complications. "Tom and his wife Tiny raised three children. Two of them have followed in Tom's footsteps and are serving on the Victoria Fire Department today. "This job would not be possible without the strong support of family, so I'd also like to recognize Tom's wife Lavonne, whom we know as Tiny. There are many family functions and events which are sacrificed in order to perform this job, and without Tiny's support, Tom's 38 years and 4 months of service would not have been possible. "Our entire Department has benefited from the service of Tom Walsh. He's always been a great leader and friend of fellow firefighters. His experience and knowledge is greatly missed. "Their sons Tim and Troy will present a plaque to Tom at this time. The plaque states that we appreciate Tom's years of dedicated service to the residents of the City of Victoria and the Victoria Fire Department, and it lists his positions on the Department. "When firefighters retire from the Department, we present them with a retirement badge. I would like Tom's wife to pin this badge on him. On behalf of the City of Victoria, I would like to thank you." *** After Tiny Walsh pinned the retirement badge on her husband, Mayor Mary Thun asked their sons if they'd like to say something at the podium. "Not often do sons or daughters get a chance to publicly say something about their dad," said the mayor. Said son Tim Walsh, "Dad basically got me on the Department, over 25 years ago now, and pretty much taught me everything that I know. He's always been there, when we had the bad calls, to talk and go through the issues. It's been a great ride and I hope it'll continue on."
