A YEAR OF DEPARTURES There were dozens of departures and deaths in 2014, many of them recorded in the pages of the Victoria Gazette. On February 24th, 2014, the City of Victoria and the Victoria Fire Department honored and recognized Firefighter Tim Walsh who had been in the Department for more than 26 years. He and his family departed to Carver. On April 14th, 2014, Victoria received notice of the demise of Fresh Seasons Market, only the second grocery store to be built in Victoria in 100 years. This one only lasted five years. Long time City Attorney Mike Norton announced in April 2014 he was leaving. The demolition of the Johnson home in downtown Victoria occurred on May 21st, 2014. It was more than 100 years old and served more than five generations of families. Victoria City Manger Don Uram announced his departure on June 23rd, 2014. Hired in June 2008, he accepted a position with the City of Wayzata. Holly Kreft, Victoria's Community Development Director, gave her notice of resignation on July 8th, 2014. The two top people at City Offices were gone in less than a month's time. On July 28th, 2014, the City of Victoria and the Victoria Fire Department honored and recognized Firefighter Gary Sohns who retired after being in the Department for 30 years. In 2014 there were many funerals of people with old Victoria roots and familiar Victoria names. The following obituaries appeared in the Gazette from January 2014 through December 2014. Karol Plocher Paulus, 72, died Jan. 2nd. Mae Schmid, 92, died January 4th. Donald Bongard, 71, died Jan. 29th. Norman Menser, 95, died Feb. 27th. Janet Maas, 94, died March 9th. Susan Storms, 69, died March 31st. Mitchell Oddo, 65, died April 15th. Madelyn Guettler, 87, died April 27th. Virginia Stowe, 77, died April 28th. Dan Workman, 80, died May 2nd. David Schimschock, 49, died May 31st. David Lindgren, 75, died June 17th. Dolores Schrempp, 84, died July 4th. Robert Ploof, 82, died July 8th. Dale Bergland, 70, died August 7th. Joan Fredin, 68, died August 13th. Florian Diethelm, 96, died August 14th. Betty Mathwig, 80, died September 11th. Norman Shutrop, 83, died Sept. 23rd. Melinda Giordana, 53, died Sept. 28th. Genarose Hohertz, 51, died October 1st. Norbert Theis, 83, died November 17th. Loren Seeley, 80, died November 24th. Evelyn Ische, 89, died November 30th. Robert Williams, 92, died December 5th. William Kelly, 79, died December 15th. It was a Watershed Year of difficult deaths and departures.
