The Victoria GAZETTE

Victoria’s Corner Bar.  Nightly Specials and Menus.  952-443-9944

by Sue Orsen/The Victoria Gazette

         Victoria has been experiencing such tumultuous times these last five years -- most especially the last two years -- that we can almost become oblivious to it, and set it aside as one might set aside an old fruitcake.  After all, life goes on and we have our daily bread to consider.

         But in reviewing 2018 for this recap of another troubled year in Victoria, the turmoil bubbled to the surface again and struck like a nightmare.  It was shocking to reread the Gazette's 2018 City Scoop, most all of it reported in depth, verbatim, as it was said and done.

Double, double toil and trouble;

Fire burn and caldron bubble.

Fillet of fenny snake,

In the caldron boil and bake.

         Macbeth is that tragedy written by William Shakespeare centuries ago.  Some of the verses seem to perfectly describe the tragedy today in the City of Victoria.

Eye of newt and toe of frog,

Wool of bat and tongue of dog,

Adder's fork and blind-worm's sting,

Lizard's let and howlet's wing,

For a charm of powerful trouble,

Like a hell-broth boil and bubble.

         As the pot of nasty ingredients continued to cook with conflict and contention  in 2018, it boiled over and flowed into the community like a plague.  Those stirring the pot seldom put the lid on it or turned down the heat.

Double, double toil and trouble;

Fire burn and caldron bubble.

Cool it with baboon's blood,

Then the charm is firm and good.

         After going through the pages and paragraphs from last year's Gazettes, I was able to place the 2018 happenings into an even one dozen categories.  I decided to identify those inside the pot first since they're all related to each other.  This is obviously not a preferred way to bring in the New Year, but what is an editor to do?  This historical reality can't be ignored or whitewashed.  It must be squarely faced.

THE “EVEN DOZEN” NUMBER OF CATEGORIES ARE ELABORATED IN THE PAPER EDITION OF THE JANUARY 2019 ISSUE OF THE GAZETTE.  THEY INCLUDE:
