Victoria Moments Continued

Bye, Bye, Birdie. This common garter snake (thamnophis sirtalis) likes to coil up on top of my woodpile and wait for a meal to come along while it suns itself.  Since they don’t have a hinged jaw, they’ll eat anything they can get into their mouth, including baby birds.  Harper and Row’s Complete Field Guide to North American Wildlife says that they make good pets.  I wonder who they polled for that statement.

Bye, Bye, Grubs.  Enough already with the snake condo!  These little house wrens are ready to get out and explore my yard.  Their parents have been fattening them up on grubs and insects from my garden.  You can’t ask for better pest control.

The Shef Shuffle. Always something going on at the University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum!  In June it included Toast and Taste and Gala in the Gardens.  An outdoor stroll of chefs encouraged visitors to sample the best local heartland menus from the Twin Cities top restaurants as well as Minnesota wines and beers.
