TWO VICTORIA FIREFIGHTERS GAVE 50 YEARS OF SERVICE Doug Schmieg and Doug Jurek retired from the Victoria Fire Department this spring with a combined 50 years of service and dedication to the Department. They were recognized at the June 8th Victoria City Council meeting and congratulated by Victoria Fire Chief Tim Walsh as well as city councilmembers and staff. A large constituency of the Victoria Fire Department were present for the public recognition. Doug Schmieg became a Victoria Firefighter in 1982. He responded to calls as a Firefighter 1st Responder and worked at Fire Department Open House, the annual Fishing Contest, and other functions. He answered 1,073 calls for service in his 27 years as a Firefighter. Doug Jurek became a Victoria Firefighter in 1986 and served as Firefighter, Captain, and Assistant Chief. He also volunteered for functions of the Victoria Fire Department. He answered 1,656 calls for service in his 23 years as a Firefighter who previously served on the Silver Lake Fire Department.
VICTORIA HAS FIRST IN THE STATE A KIOSK LIBRARY AT THE FIELD HOUSE “We will keep you in the loop as we move forward,” said Melissa Brechon, Carver County Library Director, who reported June 22nd that an application for a grant for two kiosk libraries -- at Victoria and at Hugo -- was successful. “We initially applied for a $200,000 grant and we received $100,000,” she said. “The State of Minnesota is working on a contract with the county and working on a joint powers agreement between city and county within the next several months. I will be coming back in the fall with an update. We’re hoping for installation at the end of the year with a ribbon cutting in January, 2010. I think it’s exciting. There’s no project like this, no library kiosk, in the State of Minnesota.” “First one in the state, huh?” mused Councilmember Jim Paulsen. “It’s only appropriate that it be in Victoria. Are you expecting traffic?” Replied Ms. Brechon, “I think it will take some time. I think it’s going to surprise us as we go along.” Ann Mahnke, Director of Park, Rec, & Field House, anticipates the kiosk will be located on the lower level of the Victoria Field House, as you come into the lobby. The city provides space, local oversight, telephone, data lines, and ongoing costs for lines. The county manages the site, provides collection, staff drop off and pickup, maintains the contract and any related ongoing expenses of operation for software. The library module includes three basic parts: 1) the workstation, which includes access to online information and the library materials ordering system, 2) the locker banks, which hold the customer ordered library materials and allow for customer pickup convenience, and 3) the book drop unit, which provides for customer return of library materials to a holding bin for removal by library staff.
DRAFT LMCD BUDGET APPROVED VICTORIA SHELLS OUT CLOSE TO $20,000 The Lake Minnetonka Conservation District (LMCD) submitted a draft budget to their 14 member cities for review.
