The Victoria

GAZETTE

“Councimember Roden said something about making the channel clear.  I’ve been on the Victoria City Council since January of 2003.  I’m aware that the affected party has asked for dredging of the channel many, many, many times.  The city has denied that request many times, saying that it is not the city’s responsibility.

“Councilmember Roden also brought up the Harborage.  We all know that landscapers don’t arrive in two days.  They had been working on that for some time.  I asked the Harborage if they were unhappy with the Metropolitan Council’s work and they said no.  As a matter of fact they were wondering why the Metropolitan Council was being asked to do those things with the taxpayers’ dollars.

“Now the affected party has asked for mediation.  The Metropolitan Council is surprised since two years ago they had asked for mediation.  There is another side.

“Each one of us cares very much.  We do not want this city to be part of a lawsuit.  We will continue to work with the affected parties.  I’ve always allowed the affected parties to speak.

“One of my duties as mayor is to keep things rolling with these council meetings.  We must treat each other with respect.  I don’t think I live in a lily white world.  I live in Victoria.”

The mayor said that it is no wonder Councilmember Roden would receive emails, based on her one-sided story.  “ My email address is mlhthun@mchsi.com and you are all welcome to send me as many emails as you want,” stated the mayor.  “Please don’t think that only one voice is speaking for you.  You have five voices here.  Remember that there is always a second side to things.”

Councilmember Tom O’Connor spoke next.  “I’m the newest member on the council,” he said.  “I was part of correcting things for Phase Two.  Things are significantly better with Phase Two -- not perfect, but better.  We can’t undo what was done in the past.  The Metropolitan Council is being made to look like they’re heartless and the Victoria councilmembers like fools.  The implication that we don’t care as much as someone else is just plain insulting.”

Councilmember Jim Paulsen spoke last.  “I, too, don’t have a prepared statement.  Very simply, we are not a party to the contract or the contractor on the project.  We’re not the judge and we’re not the jury.  I do believe it’s right not to throw the city into a quagmire when we don’t have to be there.”

The motion to adjourn then passed unanimously.
