The Scoop at City Hall |
To the Editor: The story of the Nelsons and Corwins is one of the saddest and most frustrating experiences I have had since I have been on the City Council. Until I visited their homes a year ago and saw what happened with my own eyes, I would not have believed it myself. I have had an outpouring of support since their stories appeared in the Gazette. So have the Nelsons and Corwins. Pete Nelson had a woman visit his home yesterday from the Swiss Mountain neighborhood of Victoria to offer her condolences. She had never met the Nelsons but felt bad for what happened to them. The Nelsons were very touched by the visit from someone whom they had never met but took the time to tell them how sorry she was for what they had been through. We have a wonderful town with a newspaper that does a good job of providing a forum for information. Kim Roden, Victoria City Council Victoria, Minnesota
To the Editor: Kim did a great job of exposing what appears to be the inadequate job that the Metropolitan Council has done for the Nelsons. Lawsuits should not be necessary. It reminds me of a story about a veteran who lost his leg in the war. The VA said that there wasn’t adequate information for them to honor his claim. Bureaucrats. Unbelievable. I really hope that Kim’s article will shake up bureaucrats who don’t do their job. Tommy Thompson Victoria, Minnesota
To the Editor: I just read Kim Roden’s missive in the June issue of the Victoria Gazette. It is inconceivable to me that her cohorts on the Victoria City Council apparently wish to proceed with the Phase Two airing of the sewer project with so many Phase One issues still alive, issues which could certainly be revisited in Phase Two. What disturbs me the most is the Metropolitan Council’s apparent indifference to the plight of homeowners who, through no fault of their own, happened to be in the way of the Council’s project. If anyone has leverage with the contractor they hired, and by extension its insurance carrier, it is the Metropolitan Council. It appears that Kim should insist that a special session be held if that’s necessary to fully address the Phase One issues raised in your article in the Gazette. Art Rotman Victoria, Minnesota
To the Editor: I was saddened to read the articles in last month’s issue of the Victoria Gazette. It prompted me to write my first letter ever to both the Gazette and Councilmember Kim Roden. Thank you, Kim, for doing what I feel is your main and responsible job of representing the people who elected you. You manner may have been uncomfortable, but your message was needed and expected from the average people in Victoria. We need other elected officials to follow your lead. Nancy Arneson Victoria, Minnesota
To the Editor: I respect ever so much Kim Roden’s speaking out on behalf of the homeowners who are affected the Phase One of the sewer project. She is an asset to the homeowners and renters who live in our wonderful community. Men such as Hitler and Stalin came to power because people were afraid to speak up or because they were not affected. Mal Macalpine Victoria, Minnesota
To the Editor: An elderly woman stopped by our house last week to offer her condolences to us for having to put up with the Metropolitan Council/Hentges and AIG. She lives in Swiss Mountain and had seen the story in the Gazette last week and felt that she needed to see us personally to offer her sympathy. Like everyone else who has responded to the story, she was glad that there is at least one courageous person on the Victoria City Council. I think her impact is greater than we know. Pete Nelson Victoria, Minnesota
