Replied Mr. Melling, "Staff would have faster internet connections above what they have currently.  Your equipment is functioning properly today but is not going to remain viable in the future.  Servers can go down.  Internet is slow.  If T-1 goes down, you have no phones and then there's a safety issue.  You're going to have more outages."

Added Mr. Lehs, "Your fiber would not be bouncing around to others but be directly dedicated to you."

"There is a payback here," said Councilmember Crowley.  "We wouldn't have to buy a new server."

City Manager Don Uram said he would not recommend bringing fiber to the new Public Works building proposed for the Bavaria Road/Hartman Tree Farm location.  "The fiber ring doesn't go there.  Fiber is close here for City Hall, however, as it snakes through town."

Mayor O'Connor said he sees fiber as  "a compelling notion."  With the 3-2 vote, a lateral will now be constructed to bring fiber to the Victoria Recreation Center.  According to City Clerk Jennifer Kretsch, "Once the city has processed the construction permit, the lateral should be completed within approximately two weeks."

When will fiber be in service at the three city locations?  Replied Jennie, "The city currently has fiber to City Hall and the Fire Station/Water Treatment Plan, but is not live on ring yet.  Staff will evaluate our current IT systems and plan for a 'Go live' date once the server/computer systems are consolidated."

According to the agreement, the city pays a one-time cost of lateral construction to the Rec Center ($14,086) plus annual maintenance of $368.40.  Term of the agreement is for 20 years unless renewed.
