Matt Shaw and Nick Orsen. I received this photo out of the clear blue via email from Matt on June 8th. He and my son Nick grew up together here in the Schutz Lake Parkside neighborhood of Victoria and were best friends. Thank you, Matt, for giving those days back to me, if only for a moment. How fun to see you both grow up to have good wives, good children, good homes. Editor Sue Victoria, Minnesota
Turkey in the Yard. Allan took this photo (and others) of another turkey trotting about our yard on the early morning of June 14th in the Schutz Lake Parkside area of Victoria. The colorful bird flared more than once and so Allan used the iPad in his hand to snap some photos. By the way, that music on my piano is not Turkey in the Straw. Editor Sue Victoria, Minnesota
Gophers in the Gardens. The University of Minnesota's Goldy Gopher invaded the University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. Ten-foot tall Goldy statues, all distinctly decorated, appear in various Arboretum gardens as part of the Arboretum's "Summer in Motion" season. Three are also indoor exhibits on Gopher mascot history in the Skyway Gallery, as well as University of Minnesota plant introductions in the Restaurant Gallery. The exhibits are presented by the Minnesota Corn Growers Association. The Arboretum is also privy to a new electric-powered 11-passenger circulator traveling Three-Mile Drive. Back 5th row: Hayley Mans of Victoria, Emily Kirsch of Holy Family in Victoria, Erik Schaffran of Holy Family in Victoria, Dylan Noack, Christina Theis. The event consisted of 30 compositions for piano ensemble played by 700 winners of MMTA State Contest. The young musicians represent the top 5 to 7% of pianists in the State of Minnesota, each one diligently preparing and memorizing their contest piece, making sure to go beyond just the notes to prepare a musically artistic performance. In February, approximately 3,500 students throughout the state had competed in the preliminary contest. Those students who qualified competed in the final contest held at the University of Minnesota.
