The Minnehaha Creek Watershed District is accepting nominations for its 2013 Watershed Heroes Awards. The awards honor individuals and organizations for their work on behalf of providing and protecting clean water in the Minnehaha Creek Watershed. This year's Watershed Heroes Awards ceremony is planned for Thursday, October 17th, at the Bayview Event Center in Excelsior.

The 2012 Watershed Heroes were a diverse group of business, government, and citizen partners in clean water, including Woodland Cove, the cities of Hopkins, Minnetrista, and Shorewood, the youth of the Mooney Lake Association, Lake Minnetonka Association Bay Captains, Dr. Peter Sorensen, and Herbert Suerth Jr.

Nominations can be submitted online at www.minnehahacreek.org/nominate or sent to tmamayek@minnehahacreek.org. Please include the name of the nominee, the award category, and a brief (less than 200 words) description of the nominee's contribution or accomplishment in one of several categories. See online. Nominations are due Friday, July 26th.

Awards fall into several categories: Excellence in Development, Innovation in Government, Outstanding Partner, Youth Naturalist, Citizen Engagement, Outstanding Contribution, Lifetime Stewardship.

MN State Senator Julianne Ortman was invited by the U.S. Army War College at Carlisle Barracks, PA, to be a civilian member and attendee at the 2013 National Security Seminar. The Seminar took place in June and serves as the pinnacle event of each academic year at the War College

A cross-section of carefully selected civilians are invited each year to attend the Seminar. At the Seminar, civilians and War College students participate each day in lectures and discussions regarding the national security issues that face today's military. As the mother of a soldier in the U.S. Army, Senator Ortman has a personal interest in the military.
