Nine members of the Carver County Sheriff’s Mounted Posse attended a training clinic hosted by the Wadena County Sheriff’s Mounted Posse on April 17-19 in Wadena, MN.  Riders from Carver County included (l-r) Denise Herntier of Shakopee, Rosey Young of Mora, Rayma Smith of Carver, Jayne Meyer of Eden Prairie, Gina Buetow of Cologne, Karolyn Kopee of Wayzata, Judy Clasen of Waconia, Mary Novakowski of Bloomington, and June Hilgers of Waconia.

Honors received by the Carver County Sheriff’s Posse included 4th place in the Parade Competition and 5th place in the Team Competition.  There were also individual honors in the Obstacle Competition and Fleeing the Felon Competition.  About 90 horses and riders attended the training from 14 Minnesota counties.  They participated in multiple drills that utilized fire trucks, protestors, fire, trains, ambulances.  Central to the training was a mock disaster and crowd control drill.

Said Carver County Sheriff Bud Olson, “We are very proud of our Posse.  Last year the group contributed a combined total of over 3,000 volunteer hours on behalf of the Sheriff’s Office, serving the residents of Carver County.”  If interested in becoming a member, contact the Sheriff’s Office at 952-361-1212.

Ben Wartman.  The University of St. Thomas baseball team just won the NCAA-Division 3 National Championship.  Ben is on the team and was the starting catcher.  I am going to forward to you an article and picture of Ben from the St. Thomas website.  I don’t know if you use stuff like this or have space for it in the Gazette, but I thought it would be fun, considering Ben’s baseball ties to Victoria ... relatives, you know.  The photo is by Mike Ekern.

EDITOR’S NOTE:  Hi, Mike,  “Former Resident of Victoria.”  Say hello to Jodene for me.  Readers might know that Julianne and the late Eugene “Euch” Wartman of Victoria are Ben’s grandparents.

Sand Storm in Iraq.  I’m sending a tree photo that was taken at 12 noon on Friday, May 8th.  We have dust storms like this once or twice a week.  This one lasted two days.  Take a blinding Minnesota blizzard, replace the snow with sand, and that is a dust storm.  The second photo is of the foyer of the Palace that I work in, taken at about the same time.  We end up breathing this for a couple of days and put wet cloths over our face.

Advancing to State.  Anne Gaslin of Eden Prairie chips onto the green for Holy Family on the way to their second straight trip to the State Golf Championship.  Matt Makis of Shakopee serves in his number one doubles match as he and the rest of the Holy Family team advances to the State Tennis Meet.
