It includes the use of one billboard, the one located near the Victoria Dairy Queen. It includes banners, flyers, postcards, a dedicated website, cable coverage by the LMCC, an Open House at the Victoria Recreation Center in September and a more formal MnDOT Open House in September. A subcommittee of the Business Development Committee is willing to help organize the Open Hosue. Holly said that the SouthWest Metro Chamber of Commerce has stepped forward with training opportunities. She reported there is a budget of $20,0000 ($5,000 for 2011 and $15,000 for 2012) to cover costs for this Marketing Plan. Councilmember Jim Crowley asked about contributions from the businesses this Plan is slated to help. Replied Holly, "Business owners are willing to work with us. It depends on what the revenues are." Asked Councilmember Crowley, "Should the city review our two one-way streets in downtown Victoria for better traffic flow during that time?" Replied City Engineer Cara Geheren, "We should look at that."
TWO DOWNTOWN EVENTS THIS SUMMER VICTORIA BUSINESSES INVITE PEOPLE OF ALL AGES Council voted 5-0 on Monday, May 9th, to give $2,500 to the Victoria Business Owners Association to help pay expenses for two events coming up this summer entitled "Get Outdoors in Victoria" (Saturday, June 11th) and "Tour de Stieger" (Saturday, July 23rd). This is in addition to the in-kind services provided by the City for these events, substantially through work of the P.W. employees. Dale Riley, owner of Fresh Seasons Market, representing the VBOA, spoke to councilmembers. "I'm here with a funding request for your consideration," he said. "This is not an expectation, but merely a request if you deem the events have merit and if you have the money. We're ever desperate to attract business and strengthen the community. Clearly there needs to be an effective communication strategy." Dale explained that "Get Outdoors in Victoria" will feature treats for children at various businesses, food and drink for adults, and a Gaminride which is a mobile video game theater available free of charge. Total expenses of the event are anticipated to be $2,150. Purpose of "Tour de Stieger," said Dale, is to highlight what will be the newly paved Stieger Lake Lane, closed off for the festivities that afternoon from 4 p.m. to midnight, but much in use as a detour route next summer 2012 when Hwy 5 will be closed for reconstruction. The event, which will include a Bowl-a-Rama, beverage tent, bands, and pig roast, is anticipated to cost $7,900. Expenses from the two events will be mainly offset by income garnered from the two events except for approximately $2,500. Asked Mayor Mary Thun, "How much money will be requested for the Volksfest this year?" "Same as last year, $2,500," replied Dale Riley. "Are there any plans to advertising the closing of Hwy 5 at this summer's Concerts in the Park?" asked the mayor. "That is certainly a good recommendation," said Dale. "We'll take advantage of that." "Have you talked to Three Rivers Park District and the Watershed District?" asked the mayor. "No," said Dale, "but we hope that people already outdoors will come into town for the enticements." "Do you think there's anyone in Victoria who doesn't know that Hwy 5 is closing in the summer of 2012?" asked the mayor. "I’d say a good number of people are not aware of it," said Dale. Asked Councilmember Kim Roden, "Is this the only request we might receive? It would be good to know the scope of this." Replied Dale, "This is the extent of money being requested by the VBOA for 2011. Our goal is to make the events self sustaining." City Administrator Don Uram said there is a significant marketing plan that is anticipated to cost $20,000. Stated Mayor Thun, "I have real concerns that we don't totally know what we're doing. I'm troubled that the proposal seems rather shortsighted. We have a Parks and Rec Director, a Community Development Director, and activities going on all over the place and we're only a community of 7,300 people." Referring to the upcoming Concerts in the Park Series in July and August, Mayor Thun added, "We will be having nine concerts in a span of two months, in a community of 7,300 people." Continued the mayor, "I'm saying we're being a little shortsighted in not working together on this. The Concerts in the Park need to be a part of this. A party here and a party there, and a sign here and a sign there, is not going to do it." Stated Mr. Riley, "We feel we have been much supported by the Business Development Committee. The concerts are another opportunity to inform people, but they are primarily entertainment. We need to tell people to support the businesses during the Hwy 5 closure. This is a business responsibility, not a city responsibility."
