City Scoop Continued

The mayor said it was her observation that the Watershed District wouldn’t attend a meeting as requested by Victoria councilmembers, where questions can be asked.

“Let them say that in a public forum,” said Councilmember O’Connor.  “Let them say such a thing and let the cards fall where they may.”

Continued the mayor, “My opinion is why do we want an elected body and an appointed body to meet and maybe say things wrong.  I am not interested in a kumbaya meeting nor a battle.  I like presenting questions beforehand.  But we are not going to change their mind about acquiring land.  They think they can be helpful to us financially.”

Administrator Uram defended his position.  “The consensus of the council was to schedule a meeting.  There is a philosophical difference between what they feel they’re entitled to and what we feel we’re entitled to.”

“Why are they going to use taxpayer dollars  for this?” asked Councilmember O’Connor.

“They believe they can offer additional resources,” replied Mayor Thun.

Said Councilmember Amundsen, “Everybody has the same goal, clean water.  The point is, at what cost and how they do it.  There are fundamental basics on this that just make it stink.”

“I think there are failures on both sides,” said Mayor Thun.  “I heard clearly from them they have the right to buy land, period.”

Stated Councilmember Roden regarding the District’s proposed format for the March 3rd meeting, “I don’t have an obligation to a facilitator.  I have an obligation to the residents of Victoria.  There’s got to be a way between throwing bombs and a Valentine’s Day card.”

“Just because they have a right to do something doesn’t make it the right thing to do,” said Councilmember Amundsen.  “I’d like to see them defend their position, at least as I understand it.”

Councilmember Paulsen pointed out some differences between how Victoria councilmembers meet and how the Watershed District meets.  “Their meetings aren’t televised.  Their meetings aren’t full of the press.  I suggest they’re fearful of meeting with us.  They’re not comfortable to come and speak as human beings do.  We want them to best themselves and they won’t do it.”

“It’s just going to be real hard to sit in a window dressing meeting,” said Councilmember Roden.

Reported Mayor Thun, “They said if a meeting dissolves into something that we want, with questions, they wouldn’t continue the meeting.   I don’t think they want to be part of a meeting where there’s inflammatory statements.”

“Well, in Victoria we deal with the facts,” said Councilmember Paulsen.  “I don’t think they feel they’re accountable to anyone.”

The consensus was that Victoria city councilmembers will submit questions for the Watershed District to answer, with the invitation for the Watershed District to also send questions to the city if they have any

No joint meeting is currently scheduled between Victoria and the MCWD.
