VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES IN VICTORIA

SIGN UP TO HAVE A VOICE FOR THE FUTURE

"We have a number of terms ending this spring," said City Administrator Don Uram on February 28th, regarding the several open positions available on City of Victoria committees and commissions including the ...

         *Business Development Committee

         *Finance Committee

         *Lake Mtka Communications Com.

         *Park and Recreation Committee

         *Planning Commission

         *Senior Commission

"We have 20 openings and so far we have only received six applications," said Mr. Uram.  "There are a lot of opportunities available."  He reminded people that applications are being accepted until March 4th and that interviews will be conducted on March 14th prior to the city council meeting scheduled for that evening.

Mayor Mary Thun reported that it might be helpful to include in advertisements the number of openings that are available within the particular committees and commissions.  She said that a resident may be more or less inclined to make application for a position related to the number of openings.

Mayor Thun also pointed out that making application to voluntarily serve in a city position can be very rewarding.  "It's a way to show leadership," she said.  "It's a way to get involved in a community.  If more people don't get involved, you're looking at the five people sitting here [the five Victoria city councilmembers] who will then make all of the decisions."

The mayor added, "This is your opportunity to get your two-cents worth in."

Councilmember Jim Crowley suggested sending emails in that regard to the various homeowners associations in Victoria.  Councilmembers Tom Strigel stated, "Input from the broader public is very important."

*Council approved a transfer of $16,675 in 2010 year-end funds that puts closure on the '04 Equipment Debt Service Fund and the '08 Street Project Fund.
