by Sue Orsen The Victoria Gazette The 30th Annual Victoria Ice Fishing Contest on February 4th, 2018, marked its milestone anniversary by being the coldest ever! At 8:30 a.m. that morning, on our way to church at St. Victoria, the car told us it was 7 below zero. By 12:30 p.m., at the start of the Fishing Contest on Stieger Lake in downtown Victoria, the temperature had warmed up to 0 degrees. The 16 mph winds kept the flags unfurled much of the time and made it feel like 24 degrees below zero. Indeed it was a bone chilling day. Despite the wicked winter weather, 200 to 300 people ventured from hearth and home that Sunday afternoon to spend a couple hours on the ice, drink hot chocolate, even a cold beer, eat hot food served inside the big tent, and catch some cool fish. By the time the Super Bowl began that afternoon at 5:30 p.m. at US Bank Stadium in downtown Minneapolis, the temperature had cooled to 2 below zero, setting a second record that day. It was the coldest ever Super Bowl Sunday in its 52-year history! Mercifully for football fans and players, the game is held indoors. The Victoria Fishing Contest has a significant advantage over the Super Bowl Game, however! The cost to attend is nominal, next to nothing, and there's a good chance of walking away with a prize from continuous drawings. Fire Chief Andrew Heger reported the fishermen who caught the six biggest fish and won the big prizes. PREDATOR CATEGORY: 1) Mark Jesberg of Victoria caught a 2.88 lb northern and won the Sonar Fish Finder donated by Glen Lake Animal Hospital. 2) Karl Clark of Chaska caught a 1.75 lb. northern and won $250 cash donated by Leuthner Well of Victoria. 3) Gretchen Ganske of Victoria caught a 1.46 lb northern and won $150 cash donated by Victoria Plumbing. PANFISH CATEGORY: 1) Marshall Cobs caught a .365 lb sunfish and won the fishhouse donated by Cabin Fever of Victoria. 2) Todd Cambel caught a .325 lb sunfish and won the ice auger donated by Dan's Heating & Air Conditioning of Chaska. 3) Dan Schwichtenberg of Waconia caught a .315 lb sunfish and won $100 cash donated by Twin City Metal Fab of St. Paul. Thank you, Victoria Firefighters, for all of your work and for sponsoring this fun winter community event.
