Convocation Circle.   On Friday, May 8th, we will dedicate and bless our new “Convocation” sculpture and the two chalice sculptures that will flank the bronze sculpture of St. John Baptist de LaSalle and two Holy Family students.  In addition we will honor Frank Miley who served as President of Holy Family from July, 2003, through December, 2006, as well as two “legacy” couples who have been dedicated supporters of Holy Family since the mid 1990s when the school was only a vision.

We will also officially close our Teaching Minds, Touching Hearts, Transforming Lives Capital Campaign and joyfully announce some exciting information about our upcoming 10th anniversary year that will usher in our second decade of excellence here at Holy Family Catholic School in Victoria.

The latest edition of Passages will detail specific information and articles about our day of celebration.

Jane Marie Quammen gained ultimate victory on April 3rd, 2008.  Jane began a battle with breast cancer in 1994, knowing victory would be hers.  Whether a healthy body or eternal life, victory for Jane was certain.  Life on earth together passed too quickly.  Together in spirit for eternity is our hope.

Please join our sons Tom, Jr., and Matt, family, friends, and others on Memorial Day, Monday, May 25th, to celebrate the lives we shared.  All are welcome to share those lives who gather among us in spirit.  Moms, dads, grandmas, grandpas, wives, husbands, daughters, sons -- we all have a life to celebrate and memories to share.  You are welcome to come and share the names of those who live with you in spirit.

After a Memorial Mass at 9:00 a.m. at the St. Victoria Cemetery in Victoria, there will be a roll call of names and prayer for those with us in spirit at 10:30 a.m. at Lions Park across the street.  Then at 11 a.m., walk to Holy Family Catholic High School and back to Lions Park for a potluck picnic.  This is a second annual walk.  Horse and wagon will be available for those who struggle walking.

Fresh Seasons Market is providing hotdogs and buns.  Thank you, Fresh Seasons.  Bring a dish to share.  You can find more information at www.st.victoria.net.

Friary Gardens.  The former Franciscan enclosure, located behind the Old Friary on the north campus of Guardian Angels Catholic Church in Chaska, is one of the oldest historic buildings in Carver County and the State of Minnesota.  It is more than simply GA’s treasure; it is all of ours.

The Friary and Gardens have an historical connection with the nearby parishes of St. Victoria in Victoria, St. Nicholas in Carver, and St. Hubert’s in Chanhassen, as well as the area now being served by Pax Christi in Eden Prairie.  As a matter of fact, the Franciscan friars served people all around the Minnesota Valley.

We are gradually making progress in planning the future for this historically and culturally significant East Carver County landmark.  There are many challenges to overcome related to the electrical box, fire ring and benches, can-crusher shed, escape door for the boiler room, the garage roof, air conditioning system, handicap access, street drains, security gate, and other long term improvements.

Bob Harvey and David Patten from Edelweiss Design (south Minneapolis and Edina) are assisting in developing a multi-year plan.  It would be nice if it were finished sometime before I was  reassigned in ten years, and during the vital lifetime of Fr. Conran Schneider, OFM, who was born and raised near Victoria in the area of Lake Bavaria, who came to call the friary home, and is now master gardener in the Friary Gardens.

The multi-year design is being paid for by a donor.  Bob and David will assist in raising funds for the improvements.  We hope that the 1868 Old Friary and Friary Gardens project will be an effort of the larger community, since the Franciscan friars lived and worked for over a hundred years in the larger community.
