The Scoop at City Hall |
In 1971, when Allan and I found our lot in Victoria, on a hill in this wooded pasture land by Schutz Lake, we were looking for home -- a home like in the front page story. I wanted space, shade trees, a tree swing, big private yard, dry basement, big bedrooms, nearby church, a Catholic school, a small town. I got all of it, except I didn't know the St. Victoria School was closing that very year. I wanted a home on this side of the Twin Cities, the southwest quadrant, so we wouldn't have to drive through an hour of city traffic before we headed home to Mom and Dad in southwestern Minnesota. It takes two hours and 20 minutes to go from Victoria to Ghent. If we stop at McDonald's in Redwood Falls, it's a little longer. *** It's interesting how things come to be written. It's probably more interesting how things come to be published. I had set aside those 2011 and 2013 notes on the stories and quotes of my parents, and the write-up was going to be a gift to my brothers and sisters whenever I got a round tuit. As I was putting it together for them a couple weeks ago, thinking of Mother's Day and Father's Day, I started to see that "Look at Mom's Hands" might be a front page story in the Gazette. It was certainly long enough. My brothers and sisters receive the Gazette, and so do some of my aunts and uncles and cousins. Think of all the printing costs I saved by passing it around through my newspaper! *** Okay, another movie review. I saw "Heaven Can Wait" with daughter Jenny and her kids Addie and Gunnar. The guys were turkey hunting for a few days in April and we didn't sit home and do nothing. How was the movie? Fine, but not nearly as good as the book. The book was about the little boy Colton and his experiences in heaven and what he saw in heaven. The movie was about Colton's parents. We weren't interested in his parents. *** We also went to see "The Little Mermaid" at the Chanhassen Dinner Theater. It was outstanding. The music, the voices, the choreography, the stage, the story, the dinner. Addie and Gunnar loved it and so did their Mama Jenny and Grandma Sue. On our way to Chanhassen for the Wednesday evening, April 16th, performance, there was a little drizzle in the air and on my windshield. Four hours later, after the show, my car was covered with snow and ice and it wasn't fun navigating back to Victoria. *** I was saddened to receive notice in April that Fresh Seasons Market in Victoria was closing. Shocked, actually. It's a beautiful grocery store, inside and out, and I thought it might survive the storm of competition from grocery stores that are located along every road in every direction in and out of Victoria. I hoped it would survive. It made Victoria look good and I'm always in favor of making Victoria look good. *** I want all of you readers to know that I receive your voice mails and emails, and I appreciate hearing from you. I usually respond timely to my emails, but not always to my voice mails and I apologize for that but it's the way I must operate in order to get anything done. If I picked up the phone every time it rang, I couldn't keep a straight line of thought or action. Please leave a detailed message when you call and know that I'll take care of things as possible. I especially appreciate the courtesies of subscribers like Vern Steinmetz and Alice English and Kermit Ohlsen and a host of others who leave messages and don't demand a return call from me. Thank you, folks. One other thing, you can always pick up a pen and paper. It's still pretty amazing how many miles and minutes you can cover for only 44 cents. *** I've loved the Mall of America since it first opened in 1992. Hard to believe it's already a 22-year experience in Minnesota. Remember when the Gatlin Brothers and Line Dancing and the Dueling Pianos were up on the fourth floor? I was the age of my children in those days. When I was at the Mall a couple weeks ago, I rode the Orange Streak rollercoaster which is really squealing good fun. Addie and Gunnar sat in the very front car with Jenny and me directly behind them in the second car. Three generations on a rollercoaster! Hey, Mom and Dad, wanna join us next time? But Gunnar and I said no to the Rock Bottom Plunge, another rollercoaster ride that leaves your stomach in your throat. Then Jenny and I said no to the Log Chute, formerly called the Flume. Kids don't care if they get wet in the middle of the Mall. *** I'm sure this wasn't the longest winter we've ever had. As a matter of fact, last year I photographed snow in Victoria in May. Hmmm. How would I photograph a month of rain? |
