The Victoria GAZETTE |
To the Editor: I was wondering if it was possible to get an electronic copy of the article in the September 2010 edition of the Victoria Gazette entitled “Special Needs Caregivers” by Tom O’Connor. Thank you. Katherine Holley Mount Olivet Rolling Acres Victoria, Minnesota
To the Editor: What a shame! Why would a local gas station, which gets much of its business from local Victoria residents, participate in a promotion to buy groceries in another town? That’s exactly what the local Holiday Station is doing -- promoting Mackenthun’s in Waconia. I would hope local businesses would support each other and not run promotions counterproductive to the other local businesses. We wanted a local grocery store for years. Now we have a great grocery store in Fresh Seasons and we need to support it and other local businesses. I would hope Victoria residents will ignore Holiday’s promotion for Mackenthun’s and shop local. Shop Fresh Seasons. John Stubstad Victoria, Minnesota
To the Editor: Thanksgiving time already. Mom would be watching for sales on the supplies for the Turkey Day Feast. Anybody that remembered my mom Rosie knew her forte of coupons. Before she passed on, three coupon files were around. One she kept in the kitchen, which I now have, some with products no longer around and such chintzy discounts of 7-cents. Those were 1970’s coupons. One file she made out of wood scraps and lined it with contact paper. And a huge file was made from an old peach crate that held court of unexpired coupons. I tossed out expired ones, discontinued products, and got it all down to one file. Mom liked the 50-cent coupons. She went to the Super Valu at Shakopee, now defunct. Double coupons always. She had a list and she’d take note on prices from store to store. She got to know the Super Valu’s owner and Tommy Notermann plenty good. Super Valu always had good finger rolls. Pies were made from scratch. If Mom didn’t have time to order the finger rolls, she made them with frozen bread dough. Then they were better yet! Turkey was baked overnight. Ma slept on the couch in the living room right behind the kitchen. I could smell the bird and the wonderful aroma in my sleep. Ma never stuffed the bird. She never liked the chance of contaminating the stuffing. The turkey was made in a huge roaster that Grandma Meuwissen got in a hardware store drawing in the early 1950’s. I have that roaster. Mom used it for sauerkraut hot dish at potlucks at the Legion. Always an empty roaster afterwards. When I moved to Talheim in 1997, the grannies were cooking up a dinner party at the place for people who have no family or plans to go out. I’m in my apartment still sleeping at 9:00 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day 1997. I woke up just after talking in my sleep, which I never otherwise do, and I could smell turkey. In my sleep I said, “The turkey’s done, Ma.” Ma died in 1991. Kay Meuwissen Chaska, Minnesota
