The Minnesota Landscape Arboretum is proud to display a 1,271-pound pumpkin grown by Mitch Krause of Chanhassen. It joined over 1,000 other cucurbits in the Pumpkin Palooza celebration held through Halloween in and around the Visitor Center at the arboretum. Except for Krause's specimen, the cucurbits were grown entirely on the grounds of the University of Minnesota Horticultural Research Center. Photographed with the pumpkin are visitors Lacy Bindl and Angela Graper. Barb DeGroot, PR Specialist MN Landscape Arboretum Chanhassen, Minnesota
EDITOR'S NOTE: The University of Minnesota Horticultural Research Center is actually located in the City of Victoria at the junction of Hwy 5 and Rolling Acres Road. Over the years, locals have called it the Fruit Farm (it's the University's fruit breeding farm since 1908), the Apple Farm (it's been featured in Mike Wartman's columns in the Gazette), and the Research Center. It consists of 230 acres purchased by the University of Minnesota in various parcels in 1907, 1920, and 1931. I featured the place in the Victoria Gazette in August of 1983 in a story called "An Apple Affair."
Pine Marten. I treed this pine marten while hiking 25 miles northeast of Grand Marais this fall. They are very aggressive and efficient hunters. Actually, I wasn't carrying my camera when we first came across him. That shot would have been an award winner. I had to have my buddy keep him treed while I ran 150 yards down a rugged narrow forest trail to my pickup and run back with my camera. I missed a beautiful shot of a bull moose standing broadside in the middle of the Arrowhead trail because I couldn't get to my camera fast enough. Kurt Zuppke Pierson Lake
At Cooperstown Dreams Park. The 2011 12AAA Chaska Hawks Baseball team competed in the annual Cooperstown NY baseball tournament with 104 teams from across the nation taking part in the action. The team went 6-0 in pool play and finished the tournament with a hard-fought loss to the Central California Baseball Academy. The tournament took place the first week of August. All the boys did fundraising in the Victoria area to help pay for their trip and would like to thank the community for the support they received in making the trip to Cooperstown Dreams Park possible.
