To the Editor:

Thank you so much for your feature story in the August issue on your travels to Scandinavia.  As you may recall (See back issues in 1988 and 1989), I was an exchange student in Norway for one year.

It was a treat to read about your trip and to see your pictures.  I'm guessing you don't have a lot of free time, but if you ever get a chance to read In Cod We Trust:  Living the Norwegian Dream by Eric Dregni, I would highly recommend it.

In the book, Dregni relates his experiences of living in Norway for one year as a Fulbright scholar.  He, too, searches for and meets relatives during this year abroad.  I personally like it because he lived near the area where I resided, and I can totally relate to some of his musings.

Thank you (Tusen Takk!) for your service to the community.  Hilsen!  (Greetings.)

To the Editor:

On behalf of Catholic United Financial (formerly Catholic Aid), we would like to thank everyone for their donations, hard work, and time to have made our Spring Rummage Sale another success.  All proceeds of our sales go to education.  In August, CUF presented Father Bob with the check from the proceeds of the sale.  This check made our total contributions reach $90,000.  CUF has paid for five classrooms in our new facility.

Finally, what would we ever do without our loyal shoppers who return year after year.  Thank you.

         Gratefully,

         Joyce Heiland, Fraternal Secretary

To the Editor:

I recently noticed the filing of Gordy Simanton for City Council.  As an active business person in the great City of Victoria, I wanted to share my support for him.  I have known Gordy for a number of years, serving on the Planning Commission and as an appointed member of the City Council.  An appointment by fellow Council people and the Mayor speaks good things about a person.

Mr. Simanton served as an officer and board member of the Island View Country Club.  I experienced his ability to work with others -- to gather complicated data and to communicate that to many audiences.  The golf course was out of the path of receiving much needed utilities as well as experiencing a change in demographics which would affect the future vitality of the golf club.  The City of Waconia had no plans to serve that area with utilities for many years.  This would hamper the course in its ability to expand and to attract new members.

I worked with Mr. Simanton and we jointly prepared a plan of action along with the golf community and surrounding neighbors.  We built our case and took our message to Laketown Township, Carver County Board Members, Metropolitan Council, and to the City of Waconia.  The task was challenging since the communities had recently completed their comprehensive plans.

With Mr. Simanton's leadership, ability to grasp a complicated situation and present that message clearly to all the stakeholders, the task was completed in a timely fashion.  The City of Waconia amended their Comprehensive Plan and it was subsequently approved by the Metropolitan Council.

The City of Victoria will be served well by this dedicated, honorable, and effective leader.

To the Editor:

The October issue of Vanity Fair had a comment on three words used in an article by Mr. Christopher Hitchens, which you may find interesting: "The article inspired me to incorporate 'quotidian,' 'neologism,' and 'exigent' in my vocabulary at the office."

Your loyal reader, one of many,

         Mr. Mal MacAlpine
