6) What are some values that you hope to instill in your children or grandchildren? "Faith, family, and friends. Focus on these three things, take personal responsibility for your actions, and always be humble." 7) When did you move to Victoria and what keeps you living here rather than down the road where there are also 'good people and small town charm'? "Julia and I moved to Victoria in December of 2006 from Apple Valley with three children. We've added one more child and two dogs since. We moved here to make room for one more Crowley, to be closer to Lake Minnetonka, and to ease the commute across rivers and Bloomington/I-494. "We found a wonderful community and new friends. The people are what make the difference in Victoria and all of us, the citizens of Victoria, are Victoria's most important asset." 8) What have been some of your favorite travel or vacation locations and why? "Our last vacation was a family of six in a Yukon XL for eight days. To describe it like that sounds horrific, but it was a blast. We visited the Alamo, San Antonio River Walk, Johnson Space Center, Vicksburg National Military Park, the St. Louis Arch. We saw Middle America -- past, present, and future. "For more relaxing vacations and when time and budget allow, we follow the tradition of my wife's family: Sanibel Island, Florida, and the beach." 9) In what ways is church or religion a part of your life? "Faith, family, and friends. Faith is first. We are active members of St. Victoria Catholic Church. I was raised Episcopalian. Julia was raised Catholic. We decided to raise our children under the Catholic faith and I went through Catholic RCIA to become a member of the Catholic Church so that I could worship with my family." 10) Which Victoria businesses do you support with any frequency? "Many. 'Local' is very important: School of the Wise, Sir Knights, Hi-Five Liquor, Subway, Cabin Fever, The Social, Floyd's, Victoria Rose Floral, Churchills, Deer Run Golf Course, Hartman Tree Farm, the Victoria Recreation Center, Crossroads, Victoria House, Vic's, Holiday, KleinBank, Timberwall, Victoria Manufacturing, Fresh Seasons ... and I am looking forward to supporting a new grocery store." 11) Which are your favorite Victoria events and why? "My absolute favorite event is Volksfest. I had the pleasure of leading the 2010 event for local businesses and it holds a special place in my heart." 12) What are some activities that draw you away from Victoria? "I have two children that run cross country for Chanhassen High School. We roam far and wide for school sporting events." 13) Do you believe the City of Victoria is moving in the right direction? Why or why not? "Victoria must grow, and we are. I believe the City is moving in the right direction. We're growing while maintaining our fiscal discipline. The City's growth is heavily skewed toward housing development and our challenge is to bring more balance with business growth. "As a city, our responsibility and expertise is with enabling others to help the city grow. I am a firm believer that the city should not be a speculative property owner. We're better at working with a business owner -- whose expertise is property speculation -- to help them achieve their goals, which are aligned with the city's goals." 14) What are a couple of your citizen interests/goals if you win election or re-election to the Victoria City Council? "The number one desire I hear from our citizens in terms of a recreational facility is a community swimming pool (water park/splash pad, etc.). From a municipality's perspective, it's hard in Minnesota to make these facilities cash flow positive, but it seems (those of us with children, at least) all 'want one.' "As the City of Lakes and Parks, I believe we need to find a way to better fund park development. We are reliant on a fluctuating housing market as the current source of funding. As we grow, dedicated annual funding is needed to add more parks and, just as important, the trails to connect them." 15) If money were no object, what is an amenity you’d like to see in Victoria? "A parking solution for downtown. The next big challenge for us to solve to enable further business growth is downtown parking."
