The Victoria GAZETTE

October 2014

Candidate Lawrence Gubbe and his wife Sylvia.

         1) Where did you grow up?  "I was born in St. Paul, started grade school in Bemidji, and after two years in Ogden, KS, when my father was recalled into the Army during the Korean War, I completed grades 3 through 12 in Bigfork, MN."

         2) What is/was the occupation of your parents? "My father was a District Ranger with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and subsequently became an Assistant Area Supervisor and then an Area Supervisor with the DNR.  My mother was a homemaker and served on the school board for the Hill City School District."

3) What is your formal education background?  "I graduated from Bigfork High School in 1962, earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering in 1966, a Master of Science in Civil and Structural Engineering in 1968, and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Structural Engineering and Engineering Mechanics in 1973."

         4) What is your occupation and where do you work?  If retired, what was your work before retirement?  "I worked for Barr Engineering Company from 1969 through 1980 and became a principal of that firm in 1978.  In 1980 I left Barr to found Project Engineering and Management, Inc.,which I sold to two of my senior employees in 1998.  I founded Forensic Engineering Services, Inc. (FES) in 1998.  From 1998 to the present, I have worked as the sole employee of FES and am now practicing approximately one-half time."

         5) What would you like to tell us about your family?  "I've been married to my wife Sylvia for 25 years; have two daughters, a son in law, a stepson and stepdaughter, six grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.  My daughters and several of our grandchildren live out of state in upper New York and Iowa.  My stepson, his wife, and three of my grandchildren live in Minneapolis."

         6) What are some values that you hope to instill in your children or grandchildren?  "The values that I would like to see my children and grandchildren inherit are honesty, integrity, independence, and the will to work hard toward a worthwhile goal."

         7) When did you move to Victoria and what keeps you living here rather than down the road where there are also 'good people and small town charm'? "We moved to Victoria in 1997 from South Minneapolis to escape from the congestion of city life.  We have put down roots in this community among our friends and neighbors."

         8) What have been some of your favorite travel or vacation locations and why? "Our favorite travel locations are northern Minnesota for its forests, lakes, and cool summers, and the Rocky Mountains of Colorado for camping and hunting."

         9) In what ways is church or religion a part of your life?  "I am a Christian and my wife is Jewish and we believe that lives should be lived in accordance with the Golden Rule.  However, neither of us belongs to nor regularly attends a specific church or synagogue."

         10) Which Victoria businesses do you support with any frequency? "We often dine at the Victoria House and occasionally have a beer at Vic's."

         11) Which are your favorite Victoria events and why?  No response.

         12) What are some activities that draw you away from Victoria?  No response.
