SHORTER VICTORIA SCOOP FROM AUGUST KEENAN DUMMER HIRED FOR PUBLIC WORKS *City Administrator Don Uram reported on August 9th that eight people (out of 70) were interviewed for the Public Works position vacated by John Hoffman and two were selected for a skills test on Public Works equipment. Keenan Dummer of Glencoe was recommended for the Victoria Public Works Worker 1 position. Council unanimously approved that recommendation. As is customary, the new hire initially works under a six-month probationary period. Start date was August 23rd. *A community meeting was held on Thursday, August 26th, to talk about the plan of Three Rivers Park District to plant a Legacy Forest on its newly acquired 12-acre site at Park Drive and 73rd Street, the former Hedtke property. *Council approved a five-year maintenance agreement with Simplex Grinnell for a fire alarm ($180 annually), security system ($519 annually), and sprinkler system for Victoria’s Water Treatment Plant and Fire Station ($270 annually). *Council approved an easement agreement with CenterPoint Energy so CenterPoint can install a new gas line along County Road 18 adjacent to Lions Park. The project includes installation of a regulator station and two six-foot upright pipes. Pine trees will be planted at CenterPoint’s expense to screen the area. *Council accepted a donation of $100 from Valerie Nichols for the Victoria Fire Department. *Council approved the purchase and installation of a new server at City Hall at a cost of $18,990 which includes hardware, software, and project labor. *Council authorized an expenditure of approximately $2,100 for City Administrator Don Uram to attend the International City/County Management Association Annual Conference in San Jose, California, from October 17th-20th. *The City of Victoria received the Blue Star Award for Excellence in Stormwater Management. Victoria has scored the highest on the Planning and Preservation category and is currently ranked second overall among a dozen communities that have applied for the award. *Council approved the Contract for Joint Assessment with Carver County for 2011-2012. The county charges $11 per residential valuation, $11.50 per agricultural valuation, and $12.50 per commercial/industrial valuation. Charges to Victoria for 2010 total $34,370 which means there are about 3,200 properties in Victoria being assessed. *Total cost for the Phase II Street improvements in downtown Victoria is $588,554. The city’s share of that is $277,453. The rest will be assessed to KleinBank ($50,000), Lloyd Braunworth ($46,900), Hartman Brothers ($29,800), Vic’s Bar and Grill ($19,700), Richard and Michelle Gannon ($45,600), and Fresh Seasons ($83,200), as well as an additional $90,000 in assessments to the City of Victoria. *Council accepted $100 donation from Kiersten Hansen for the Victoria Fire Department. *Administrator Don Uram reported August 23rd that Carver County was awarded $6 million for its fiber optics project. “This would be a 2011 project with Victoria at the end of the line, so probably 2012 for Victoria,” he said. *Councilmembers reported that the Library Kiosk at the Victoria Recreation Center is going over very well. *Jylan Johnson reported that because of all the rain, people have been using less water, which is a good thing, but it has resulted in a city shortfall of $63,000 in water revenue. |
