No, this column is not celebrating 40 years. The Gazette itself is only 31 years old, for goodness sake, and I’m not sure exactly when this column started. I do know that I got the idea for Hook Line & Sinker not long after I subscribed to Country magazine, where they hide a needle every month somewhere on their pages, and I’d fall asleep at night with the magazine on my chin.

Yes, it was like looking for a needle in a haystack and it was frustrating to not spy that needle after diligently searching every square inch of every page, one after the other, with tired night eyes.

Well, the last thing I want to do is copy anybody but the concept was appealing so I decided to hide something within the pages of the Gazette, too.

And, then, walla! No, not walleye, but a fishhook! After all, Victoria is a city of lakes and parks. Lots of fishermen live and love in this neck of the woods.

Did you fall asleep looking for the fishhook that I hid in the last issue of the Gazette? Many of you wrote or emailed about its location in the Hartman Tree Farm ad on page 10 of the September issue. It is that business celebrating 40 years in the community. Congratulations, Jeff and family.

And congratulations to Gerald Poppler of Laketown Road in Chaska, for it was his name drawn from the minnow bucket to win the $10. He found the fishhook and wrote to tell me about it: “Please enter my name in the drawing. This is the first time I’ve searched for the hook in more than five years of getting the Gazette.”

I hid the fishhook in this issue of the Gazette also. If you find it, drop a line to the Gazette using P.O. Box 387, Victoria, MN 55386 or use Sue@VictoriaGazette.com, telling of its location and sinker in the mail or email. You’ll be placed in the minnow bucket with all the other little minnows and at the end of the month, you might just be the slippery little feller that I pull out to win the ten bucks.
