2) Where were you born and where else have you lived? “I was born in Marshalltown, Iowa. I lived in Des Moines, Iowa, for five years after college and then moved to the Twin Cities where I have lived for 20 years. In addition to Victoria, I have also lived in North St. Paul, Eagan, and Apple Valley.” 3) Tell us about your family. My wife Julia and I have been married 15 years. We have four wonderful children: Caroline (12), Benjamin (10), Olivia (7), and Greyson (3 in December) ... and Sophie, a Springer Spaniel (1 1/2 years old). 4) What is your formal education and how did it prepare you for today? “I graduated from Iowa State University with a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree in Management Information Systems and from Drake University with a Master of Business Administration. “Both degrees emphasize business knowledge and business management acumen. The undergraduate degree in MIS added the technical and operational aspects of how to run and maintain a business from the perspective of information technology. “The combination of understanding how to develop, implement, and manage the operational systems that drive a business, along with the ability to actually manage business operations, has been very beneficial -- bringing the perspective of both what to do and how to do it.” 5) What is your work experience and how can it help you serve the City of Victoria? “I started my career as a Systems Consultant for an insurance company providing technical support and application development services, which led to project management for computer systems and their implementation. “From there, I moved into enterprise software sales, selling high-value software applications to Fortune 500 companies. “Most recently, I have focused on helping software companies sell their software and services, both online and direct to the buyer, including a leadership role with a local publicly traded internet services company. “These ‘selling’ experiences have been tremendous in terms of learning how to listen and understand and how to work with and lead a team of people. “All of my career activities have focused on Business Development and working with teams of people to deliver something of value for an organization. What I bring to the City of Victoria and what I have already demonstrated through my roles with the city’s Business Development Committee and the Victoria Business Owners Association is an ability to look at a challenge or opportunity and figure out how to add value. “I perceive business development as a jigsaw puzzle. For a City Council, the pieces of the puzzle are comprised of people, processes, and systems. The objective is to figure out how to put puzzle pieces together in ways that bring value to constituents. Through my work experiences, I have learned how to successfully put these puzzles together.” 6) What are some of your various memberships and why have you chosen those memberships? “St. Victoria Catholic Church. I believe that life is driven by faith, family, and friends. Faith is first. “Minnetonka Power Squadron, 2008 President/Commander. My family loves recreational boating. The Minnetonka Power Squadron is a unit of the United States Power Squadrons comprised of over 35,000 members nationwide. “Membership in this organization has taught me how to be a better safe boater and led to experiences in leading a large volunteer organization. This was a minimum six-year commitment to a leadership path, culminating in the role of President/Commander in 2008. “The skills learned here led directly to my ability to help found and lead the Victoria Business Owners Association, now responsible for the Volksfest and Art Fair and other philanthropic and local business development activities within the city. “Victoria Business Owners Association, Founding President. Our focus is to sponsor and deliver the next generation of Volksfest and Art Fair, provide business development expertise to local businesses, and philanthropically support the community of Victoria, MN. “City of Victoria, Business Development Committee, 2009-2010 Chairperson. I enjoy learning about and helping others grow their businesses. Working with this committee led me to seek the open City Council position.” 7) What are your favorite leisure activities and hobbies and why do you enjoy them? “Physical fitness/running and biking. Exercise is a wonderful tonic to help clear the mind and bring focus to things in such need. “Boating. It’s a great hobby. I love days and weekends with the family on the lake. Tinkering with the boat and its various systems is fun. “Technology in all forms ... reading, learning, and tinkering.”
