The Scoop at City Hall |
I am happy to have received in August delicious sweet corn once again from Victoria land magnates, Jerry and Jane Michel. It is the best sweet corn I've ever tasted. I think I've said that every year since I was a little girl and ate sweet corn grown at home on the farm. "Best sweet corn I've ever tasted." And I mean it every single year. Thank you, Jerry and Jane. *** I am happy to have seen in August the 2016 remake of "Ben Hur" produced by Roma Downey and Mark Burnett, a married couple who have been successful with other faith-based movies. As I surmised last month in this column, the remake was to introduce a new generation of viewers to Judah Ben-Hur and Messala. What did I think of the remake? Five stars out of five stars, especially compared to other fare at theaters today. Throughout the movie I continually found myself comparing it to the 1959 version with Charlton Heston. How did it compare? Favorably. Which do I prefer? The 1959 version. Why? Because the ending of the 2016 remake is not so realistic to me. See for yourself. *** I am happy to have held a dinner party in August for old friends Fred and Mary Sue Plocher, Jim and Nan Emmer, and Stan and Jayne Hamerski. I've been wondering why I didn't have my camera on hand that evening, as is my wont, and I came to realize it's partly due to the fact that I was at the piano for the last couple of hours. Although I can walk and chew gum at the same time, I can't play piano and snap pictures at the same time. But let me tell you, can that group sing and harmonize! Some of the pieces included "Sentimental Journey," "Scarlet Ribbons," "Mona Lisa," "Whatever Will Be," "Oh, Susannah," and several country songs and also churchy songs. *** Okay, so I also didn't have my camera out for a subsequent dinner party with old choir friends. But we eat well and we laugh a lot. *** I am happy to have read in August that Target listened to many of its customers. The boycott worked and now I get to shop there again. Earlier this year, following directives of the Obama administration, Target approved of men going into women's bathrooms because of a particular persuasion that day. Now Target is spending $20 million to add single-stall unisex bathrooms to each of their stores by next year, which means they defend their company stance on "diversity," but it shouldn't affect me or my grandchildren. In any case, I think the $20 million would have been better spent to feed and house the poor and homeless and flood victims in Louisiana. *** I am happy to have learned in August that the differences between the two U.S. presidential candidates this year are stark, which means we indeed have a clear choice. Trump picked a pro-life vice president, while Hillary picked a pro-abortion vice president. Trump promises to defund taxpayer support of Planned Parenthood while Hillary loves Planned Parenthood, which is the biggest provider of abortion and a proven seller of infant body parts. Trump is bluntly honest, whether refreshing or not. Hillary blatantly lies, which is never refreshing. Trump talks to everybody. Hillary hides. *** I am happy to have spent more time in August on the streets of Victoria, eating Mother Plocher's Wings at Floyd's, Pepperoni and Green Olive Pizza at School of the Wise, Pork Chops on a Stick by the Victoria House, and Brats by Vic's Bar and Grill. It's been a very warm and wonderful time as we again strolled from one place to the next, visiting Classic Cars and their owners, listening to concert music on the shores of Stieger Lake, and running into people we know or people who know us. It's Americana at its best and we get to partake of it each summer in downtown Victoria. And it's still summer! *** I am happy to have maintained the freedom in August to simply report the news as it occurs. I didn't have to make decisions regarding issues in front of the Victoria City Council or the Victoria City Staff or the Victoria Business Association or the Victoria Lions or the Victoria Fire Department or the Victoria Churches. There are issues that can weigh heavily on the pocketbook or on the minds and the life, liberty, and likes of others. Sometimes my job seems huge and overwhelming to me, but by and large I don't have to answer to a constituency or a citizenship or a membership or even the community at large. I mainly have to answer to myself and God, which is quite a treat considering the alternatives.
