GAZETTE

To the Editor:

Hi, Sue.  Just some friend to friend information I wanted to share.  My husband Erlen lost his two and a half-year battle to cancer on February 1st.  He endured many treatments with patience and hope.  It was nice to see some familiar faces come from Victoria.  Also, did you know that Judy Folden (Al's wife) passed away at the end of January?  Take care and God bless.

         Mavis Schroeder

         Mayer, Minnesota

EDITOR'S NOTE:  Thank you for writing, Mavis.  No, I didn't know about either of the deaths.  You have our sympathy.  Those were good old days at the Victoria Post Office.  We are also lucky to have Barb, today.

To the Editor:

We recently returned from a visit with our daughter Peggy in Phoenix, Arizona.  We had dinner with Dave and Rosie Williams while we were there.  Our daughter Betsy and family from Atlanta flew out and then went to the Grand Canyon and Sedona.  We took the long way home and went to California through the Redwood Trees.  In Oregon we visited a former classmate of Dan's, Harry Kowalke.  We spent a pleasant evening with him and his wife.  He grew up in the area near Grimm's Alfalfa Home in Carver Park.  We told him about your neat newspaper.

Please start a subscription for him with the April issue.  Check enclosed.

We continued north and visited my 94-year old cousin in Seattle and friends in Spokane.  The weather and roads were great.  The scenery was beautiful.  Now looking forward to spring.  Greetings from Dan.

Found the fishhook on page 32 around the Birthright emblem.  Thanks for continuing to run that ad.  You will be blessed.

To the Editor:

Hi, Sue.  The article in your March issue ["The Red Barn at the MN Arboretum is a Williams Barn!"] was very interesting.  Raymond and Caroline Williams' farm (my parents) was located to the south of the Dr. Beren's farm.  It was 100 acres.  The land was sold to the MN State Horticultural Society around May 1962.  The house was sold later.

There were a number of Williams' on 82nd Street near the Arboretum, namely Gertrude Kraemer, Ida Heutmaker, Raymond, Bill, and Dave.  They were siblings.  Joe and Hank were brothers, and cousins of my dad.  Later, Hank and Agnes moved to the little green house that was at the northeast corner of the intersection of Hwy 5 and Park Drive.  Thanks for doing the Gazette.

To the Editor:

Hi, Sue.  As you know, the City of Victoria won a website makeover contest and I am looking for amazing photos of the City to use on our website.  If you have any photos and would like to share, I am looking for photos in the following categories:  Architecture, Landscapes & Cityscapes, People & Activities, Nature & Animals, Culture and Art.  Thank you.

To the Editor:

Thank you for the March issue of the Gazette.  I see that there are two photos of my mom, Jeanne Firestone, inside, taken 50 years apart.  It was a nice surprise to see her in the paper at age 7 and age 57.  Can I get a copy of the school photo?  It also depicts her cousin Jim Fink.

To the Editor:

In reference to the old school days picture in the March edition, always enjoy seeing my long-ago classmates.  I do remember most of them, although have not been at the school since 1938.  The teacher was a cousin of my father, Herbert, and Esther Krey was his cousin's wife.  So many ties to Victoria.   Lots of family history with Lake Auburn Moravian Church where I was baptized and confirmed.  Thank you for keeping some memories alive.
