To the Editor: At the recent SouthWest Metro Chamber of Commerce Annual meeting, Victoria’s Scott Manion was selected as Volunteer of the Year! Scott has provided numerous pro bono hours offering his financial expertise to the Chamber, which includes ensuring that the financial reports accurately represent the Chamber’s financial pictures to the Board and over 450 participating members. Scott is a CPA and partner of the financial services firm Boulay, Heutmaker, Zibell & Co. P.L.L.P. At the same meeting, Scott was elected to the Board of Directors of the SouthWest Metro Chamber of Commerce. Scott is also part of Victoria’s Business Development Committee and was the first private citizen who served on the City of Victoria’s Finance Committee, which is the Committee that reviews the city’s yearly financial budget for the City Council. The Committee also advises the City Council on fiscal policies and procedures and reviews the city’s annual audit prior to it being submitted to the full Council. Scott served four years on the Finance Committee. Scott and his wife Lisa live in Victoria with their two young children. As Mayor, I had the distinct pleasure to sit next to Scott at this annual Chamber meeting and see his surprise at receiving the Volunteer of the Year award and watch him be elected to the Board of Directors. Thank you, Scott Manion, for representing Victoria so well. Mayor Mary Hershberger Thun City of Victoria, Minnesota
To the Editor: Just over one year ago, I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease. I left the specialist’s office with these instructions: “Adhere to a gluten-free diet.” I went home and started combing through my pantry and was overwhelmed by how much food in our home had some form of gluten, whether it be wheat, barley, rye, oat, or any combination of these four ingredients. I figured I would designate a shelf in the cupboard for “gluten-free” and the rest of the family could continue eating what they wanted. This might have worked, but we had our sons screened and Jameson was also diagnosed with Celiac Disease. As one can imagine, this was tough news for our son. He immediately thought of all the things he could no longer enjoy. The list went from Einstein Bagels to Taco Bell burritos and everything in between. I realized that I was going to need to put a lot of effort into making “gluten-free” a normal part of our lives. It has taken time, but we are successfully navigating the gluten-free life and finding it very manageable. I have been doing the majority of our shopping at Fresh Seasons Market for some time now. I shop there because of their nice selection of gluten-free and all natural foods. But, as with many families, we are trying to save where we can so I began to wonder if I could be saving money by buying my everyday staple items at different, larger chain stores and still get my gluten-free items at Fresh Seasons Market. I went to four stores in the area -- Cub Foods in Shorewood, Rainbow in Chaska, Mackenthun’s in Waconia, and Fresh Seasons Market in Victoria -- and did my own little price and selection comparisons. What did I take away from the experience? First, I don’t want to have to shop various ads to make sure I’m getting that extra 10-cents off an item for the week. Second, the price did not vary much among the four stores so I have proven to myself that driving around to various stores probably won’t save me money once I factor in my time and gas expense. For me, going to the grocery store is a necessity, not a love. I can honestly say that I enjoy walking into Fresh Seasons Market. There is always someone with a welcoming smile, ready to assist, if needed. I almost always run into a friend or an acquaintance, which is an added bonus. Rick, your smiling face is missed. Hurry back! I have become a loyal Fresh Seasons Market customer because it is convenient, has exceptional customer service, competitive prices, great selection, and quality products. I think Fresh Seasons does an amazing job serving Victoria and the surrounding communities. Thanks for supporting our community by shopping Fresh Seasons Market. Elizabeth Kenney Victoria, Minnesota
