by Sue Orsen It seems to have happened in 2013 that Victoria became a city of full-blown events. You might say that Victoria became a destination in 2013. When several hundred people assemble at one time, it becomes more than a "gathering" or a "party." It becomes an "occasion," a "happening," an "event." Victoria's events became unusually bigger and better in 2013. There were at least twenty events in Victoria last year that drew large crowds totaling several thousands of people over the year, making Victoria a destination, not just a passing-through place on Highway 5 between Chanhassen and Waconia, not just a city of lakes and parks with beautiful neighborhoods in between. This January 2014 issue of the Gazette now takes a moment to wrap it all up and put a ribbon on it. The events, which are being presented and summarized here in no particular order, were also reported as they happened and then posted for posterity in Sue's Album at www.VictoriaGazette.com.
The Volksfest and Art Fair. Friday and Saturday, August 16th and 17th. It was probably the most wonderful Volksfest ever. The 80 degrees and balmy breezes were balanced by the brilliant blue sky decorated with big bouncy clouds that provided occasional shade reprieve. Attendance was estimated to be around 3,500 people. Volksfest included again a fireworks display over Stieger Lake with over 1,000 people watching it in beautiful downtown Victoria that Saturday night.
Eight Classic Car Nights. Wednesdays, June 12th and 26th, July 10th and 24th, August 7th and August 21st, September 4th and 18th. It's like stepping back in time, like being in a black and white movie except it's all in color. Vintage music plays in the background like it's being piped in from old records. Every restaurant becomes a sidewalk cafe. Hundreds of people were drawn to downtown Victoria for each of the Classic Car Nights through the efforts and cooperation of businesses and city.
Victoria Fire 100th Anniversary. Celebrated on Saturday, July 13th. Victoria firefighters had a gigantic tent set up in Diethelm Park for the occasion with historical photos and memorabilia, food and drink, tours of current and antique fire trucks, music and activities for young and old. Fireworks in the evening topped off the historical event.
Lions Tournament Weekend Friday, Saturday, Sunday, July 12 -14. The weather has perhaps never been more pleasant for the annual Lions Tournament than that which occurred in 2013. It's the biggest fundraiser of the year for the Victoria Lions. Hundreds of ballplayers and town folks fill the ballfields, bleachers, shelters, and grassy treed landscape at Lovely Lions Park.
Two Lions Pancake Breakfasts Sunday, March 3rd, and Sunday, December 1st. The Victoria Lions made and served breakfast to hundreds of people again in 2013.
