New Year's Day. Wed., Jan. 1st. Happy New Year, 2014! It is the first day of the year on the modern Gregorian Calendar as well as the Julian Calendar used in the Roman Empire since 45 B.C. The Gregorian Calendar of 1582 was introduced by Pope Gregory XIII to include leap days. The Julian Calendar had been introduced by Julius Caesar in 46 B.C. A Julian year averaged 365.25 days.

Martin Luther King Day. Monday, January 20th. An American federal holiday marking the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. to celebrate the life and achievements of the influential civil rights hero. He was born on January 15th, 1929, and assassinated on April 4th, 1968.

Fishing Contest. Sunday, February 2nd, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. on Stieger Lake, with access off Stieger Lake Lane near downtown Victoria. Sponsored by the Victoria Fire Relief Association.

Red Cross Bloodmobile. Wednesday, February 5th, at the Victoria Recreation Center from 1:00 to 7:00 p.m. Sponsored by the Victoria Lions. Contact Brian Tjenstrom at 763-354-9310 to volunteer to help coordinate the drive.
