HONORING VICTORIA FIREFIGHTERS FOR YEARS OF WORK AND DEDICATION Mayor Mary Thun and Fire Chief Andrew Heger recognized the work and tenure of outgoing Fire Chief Tim Walsh and retiring Firefighter Dean Adams at the February 27th meeting of the Victoria City Council. Most of the Fire Department was in attendance for the occasion. Tim Walsh, 25-year member of the Victoria Department who has served in many positions and as Fire Chief since 2005, recently stepped down from the top position. "I stepped down in order to change my priorities in life," he said. "I went back to school for my Bachelor's Degree and couldn't put in the time I needed or wanted to do. Thank you to all of the Department. They made me look good. We all work together." Said Mayor Thun, "I have enjoyed immensely working with you. You have been an inspiration to all of us. I credit you with bringing us succinct information. You've ben instrumental. I really got to know you and I appreciate you. Thank you on behalf of all of us." Dean Adams, a Victoria firefighter since 1990, retired now in 2012 after 22 years of service. Said Dean, "It's been a proud 22 years for me. I'm going to miss them a little bit. Thank you." Fire Chief Andrew Heger pointed out that in order to be a good firefighter, family support is very helpful. Members of the families of both Tim Walsh and Dean Adams attended the council meeting and were also recognized and thanked. Said Mayor Thun to Chief Heger, "We're all looking forward to working with you, too." She said the two busiest corners in Victoria seem to be at the Fire Station and at Floyd's. Also at the February 27th city council meeting, councilmembers approved the hiring of two new Victoria firefighters, Ryan Rivers and Brady Lee, as Basic Firefighters. It was pointed out that Brady Lee, although not a resident of Victoria, is an employee with the City of Victoria Public Works Department and will therefore be available to respond to daytime calls. Basic Firefighters are paid $8.24 per hour per call of duty. Cost of their required courses totals $1,375 per firefighter and includes First Responder and Firefighter classes. With the addition of Ryan and Brady, there are 29 Victoria firefighters. The Department is authorized to have up to 35.
