by Sue Orsen It was a pretty nice day on the lake as temperatures hovered in the 20's and gave hundreds of people, big ones and little ones, a chance to get some fresh air and a few fish. Victoria Fire Chief Andrew Heger estimated the crowd at 400 to 500. He said ice thickness that Sunday afternoon, February 7th, ranged from 12 inches to 16 inches, which is why a couple school buses were kept busy escorting visitors from downtown parking lots to the shore of Stieger Lake. "We typically like to see the ice above the 20-inch mark for parking on the lake," he said. Biggest predator fish was a 5.58 lb northern pike pulled in by Mark Stolnieks of Victoria. The catch awarded him first prize of a power ice auger. Biggest panfish was a .33 lb sunfish caught by Mark Goldberg of Victoria who went home with the first prize portable fish house. "On behalf of the Victoria Firefighters Relief Association, I would like to say thanks to all the businesses and individuals who made our annual ice fishing contest another success," said Andrew.
