by Sue Orsen The Victoria Gazette In their more than five decades of serving the Victoria community, and others, the Victoria Lions have increased their list of annual events. Two of the Lions' more recent "annuals" include their second Fish Fry, held this year on April 5th, and their fifth Spring Fling, held this year on April 26th. Each was held in the Lions Park Pavilion, which the Lions constructed and donated to the city in 2018. Lion Brent Romensko, who chaired the Fish Fry, reported that about 560 people were served about 500 pounds of fish. "We have always gotten great feedback on the quality of our fish and the batter mix," said Brent. "One aspect of our fish fry that others don't have is our own secret Victoria Lions Tartar Sauce," he said. "Guests asked us repeatedly for the recipe, but it's something that is only made at the Victoria Lions Fish Fry. The recipe can be neither told nor sold!" Brent reported that Jim Meuwissen, the Lions' contracted fish fryer, is very generous with his time and experience. "He met with our team several times leading up to the event. He and his brother John then spent more than six hours on the day of the event, doing the frying." "The pavilion worked out really nicely and we got a lot of positive feedback on the facility," said Brent. "The one aspect that we heard as a challenge was parking, which is a common challenge for popular events." Lion Matt Bergmann and his wife Erica once again chaired the annual Spring Fling, where area vendors introduce and provide food and drink samples from their establishment to a crowd this year of over 350. Where did Bergmanns get the idea for it? Replied Matt, "The Norwood Lions host a similar event called Harvest Moon. We borrowed a few ideas from them and made a modified event." The first Victoria Lions Spring Fling was held in the old Village Hall on Rose Street in April 2014 and then "under the tent" at Lions Park. The Lions took a Spring Fling reprieve in 2018 because of their pavilion project. Prominently displayed at the 2019 event was a painting of a majestic lion, king of the jungle, a gift from Erica "who had it for around 15 years and donated it to the Lions."
